Someone asked a month or so ago about if anyone had used the SFX-03 as a preamp direct to a board or hard drive. I had some time tonight to set up a basic test. The 5 and 7 year old are having a sleep over tonight as there is no school here tomorrow. I was cleaning up the music room and had the Ultra G in my hand.
I ran the line out of the pedalboard into the Ultra G (4x12 emulator on) then into a line in on the PA (Berhinger board and a pair of B300s). I do not have the computer set up down there right now so I could not record it. But, I was surprised here. It worked very well. I was able to get a nice clean, mild od, classic rock and 80's rock tone. Country, Blues lead tones, rock leads and a Santana-like lead were able to be pulled (to me anyway). In this application a mid control could have helped. It was dynamic and responded to volume changes on the guitar. Sorta Vox-Marshallish sounding to me. I figured it was something I would spend some time with soon. I have a couple of tunes I have been working on so I want to see how it fits in the mix.
Now this was not a great test. The Ultra G is not a great cab emulator compared to, say, a Palmer. The Berhringer board is what it is as are the B300's (not bad but not studio quality). I did not have a chance to test it in a mix. I did not have time to really tweak either before I had a tone of kids in the room asking me to do this and that for them. But, this was enough of a test that I think some folks who are very good at this sort of thing might find it worth their time.
