using Vaseline to lube guitar screws?

Re: using Vaseline to lube guitar screws?

sure

as is graphite
pencil lead (which is graphite)
ky
WD40
and whatever else you might use

Any specific screw or issue?

Re: using Vaseline to lube guitar screws?

Vaseline is a poor choice. It is sticky, so would attract dust over time and turn into a black greasy mess. Graphite/pencil lead is better - provides lubrication without being as messy.

Re: using Vaseline to lube guitar screws?

Use a bar of dry soap. Scrape it along the threads. It lubes the screw without softening the wood, like oil or Vaseline can.

Re: using Vaseline to lube guitar screws?

I used soap for all the screws on my Warmoth. It is cheap and a bar in the toolbox will last a lifetime.

Re: using Vaseline to lube guitar screws?

I actually put a drop of gun oil on when needed (cop)

Soap is a good call though.

Candle wax. I just have a couple of tea-lights handy in the tool kit. Drag the screw thread across it a couple of times and you're good as gold. I'll do the same with my nut slotting files too; kind of acts like the final polish to the slot when you're doing the last couple of cuts.

Re: using Vaseline to lube guitar screws?

I always use candle wax as well. I never thought of using it for nut filing tho', so I'll have to try that next time!

Note that some types of oil may damage some finishes, and some, particularly anything containing silicone, can cause problems with future refinishing, should it become necessary.

Re: using Vaseline to lube guitar screws?

Soap = oil + alkaline. I wouldn't want the inside of a Duracell battery getting on my guitar's finish.

Try lock lubricant, which is basically graphite powder in a little tube.

Lanolin.

"Lanolin is used commercially in many industrial products ranging from rust-proof coatings to lubricants. ... The water-repellent properties make it valuable as a lubricant grease where corrosion would otherwise be a problem."
