V100: SH-PG1N with the SH-14 (or SH-13) a good combination?

Hi,

I plan to change the stock PUs from my Vintage V100 to the SH-PG1 Pearly Gates on the neck and the SH-14 Custom 5 (or the SH-13 Dimebucker) on the bridge.

Do they harmonize together, or what combination to the SH-14 (or SH-13) would be a better choice?

Thank you & Greetings,
cya

I think you'd find the PG1 and SH14 to work better together. I feel the SH13 dimebucker to be a very specialized pickup, it does Pantera and the like very well, but the "fizzy sizzle" it has doesn't do anything else as well as something versatile like a custom in my opinion. I have a PG1n in a guitar and its probably my second favorite neck pickup(behind the SH1n). The PG1n is a little bassy at times in my experience so be ready for that.

For reference, the Vintage (JHS) V100 is a Lester copy. Stock hardware and pickups by Wilkinson.

Q1 - What do you find unsatisfactory about the output and tone of the neck/Rhythm position pickup?
Q2 - Do you have the soldering skills and confidence to remove a metal cover and change a bar magnet?
Q3 - Presumably, for the bridge/Treble position pickup, you seek more output and a tad more high frequencies?

@swyse The SH1n could be really a better choice, it is more a "singer" than the PG1!

I also love the sound of John Lee Hooker, ZZ Top an some Coutry picking (forgot this in my 1st post)

The stock V100 comes verry close to my needs, I ike this "crunchy", heavy and bassy sound from the neck - I just want a cleaner and higher sound (as from the SH-14) and this growling bass on dirty from the SH-14.
Maybe just change the bridge PU only would be enough (plan to do this step by step)

A little more clean Treble with cleaner disortion (or crunch I think)

Q2 - Do you have the soldering skills and confidence to remove a metal cover and change a bar magnet?
Yes I know how to solder and with a good manual I think I can change a bar magnet. Metal cover = Humbucker Cap?

Q3 - Presumably, for the bridge/Treble position pickup, you seek more output and a tad more high frequencies?
This describes my needs ;-) - more and cleaner.

A1 - Change magnet in existing neck/Rhythm position pickup from Alnico 5 to Alnico 4. Re-attach cover.
A2 - Please yourself.
A3 - Change magnet in existing bridge/Treble position pickup from Alnico 5 to Alnico 8. Possibly, leave cover off.

What lenght does the magnets have? 2,50"?
For example with the Alnico 8 - Can I use this one: Alnico 8 Humbucker Bar Magnet,Rough,2.50"(L),1 piece,Magnetized (link)?

Just have to find some in europe...

EDIT: Placed an order of Alnico4 and Alnico8 Magnets in the UK. I will tell you the results after the replacement.
