V30/Greenback combos, Greenbacks for Metal? G12t75/V30 Combos?

Alright; I've got some speaker swapping to do in my new Rivera cabinet.

I basically have these ideas in mind:

4xV30
4xGreenbacks
V30's and Greenbacks in an X pattern
V30's and G12t75's in an X pattern


It's currently got an X pattern of V30's and Mesa Black Shadows. I like them, to an extent, but I'm looking for something different. I want the tone to be more open and warmer over all, and also a bit tighter.

How do Greenbacks work out for metal? I finally have a cabinet I can load with them (due to wattage reasons beforehand, I couldn't), and I'm interested! I know The Haunted and James Murphy both use Greenbacks and get killer tone out of them.

I just swapped some speakers around in my cabinets and I put two G12T's on the bottom, and two V30s on top

Sounds AWESOME. I get the chunk and punchiness of the G12Ts and the thick mid/upper range of the v30s.

My friend stephen (MetallicaJS1) just brought down his V30 loaded Avatar so I could compare...

I'm putting V30's in my cabinet. The sound orgasmic with a 5150.

Have you thought about the original 5150 or 6505 cab to go with your head?

I have, I prefer the sound of V30's actually. The speakers in the 5150 cab are basically higher wattage Greenback copies, and don't mic up nearly as well as the v30's.

Have you actually tried out the 5150 cab? I haven't myself, I just heard a lot of stuff about the real 5150 cab being the only option for an 5150 head, especially on JCF.

There was this one guy here on SDF, who posted a lot of killer VH clips, that played a 5150 combo through a marshall cab with greenbacks. The sound was 10+. Try to check those greenbacks out too if you can. If I had to make a blind choice without getting to test drive different ones, it'd be my #1 choice, no doubt about it.

For rock/metal, that combo is great! You get the crunchy highs and punchy bass out of the G-75's, and the rich mids out of the Vin 30's. If you don't have G-75's you can get them CHEAP, because they're the stock speakers in most Marshall cabs, and guys are always willing to sell them for low $'s.

Ugh now I'm really eager to try out that combo...it's even used in the Uberkab...


Johtosotku, I actually have tried it. I liked it, and it sounded like your typical 5150, but I'm going for something a bit different. Think of a 5150/Recto combo almost.


Well, I put both V30's on top tonight, and it's better than before. Definitely liveable with! I'll check it out when my Maxon gets in tomorrow, and then see if it need's any changing. I'll be trying out the x pattern of V30's and G12T75's first, though.

Hey man, try the Eminence Man O War. It rocks! It's their take on the 75, but I think it's better. You can mix those with the V30's, or pick up 2 Governor's to go with the Man O War's in an X pattern. That's what Scott Splawn is using in his cabs now. Very tight and righteous tone.

Even the Eminence Black Powder would suit you fine, not quite as early breakup as the G12T75 but boy does that thing wompwhen you get it there. I'm partial for the G12T's with a 5150 myself as far as celestion speakers go, but in the long run I'm partial to Eminence, they really allow you to pick and choose your tone.

The Patriot/Redcoat line has so many choices. One is bound to suit you. Can't beat the prices also.

I like Celestions and Emi's mixed also. A Private Jack and a Celestion V30 are nice.

Kindred Spirits: you need to get 16 ohm G12-75s to match the 16 ohm V30s. For one, it would be necessary in order to keep the total cabinet load at 16 ohms. Second, it's never a good idea to mix speakers of different impedences within the same signal loop. It can be done, but can create a lot of headaches. Mixing loads also means that the speakers with lower resistance recieve more power. Total cabinet impedance also gets a little trickier to calculate.

Well, I just got my OD pedal in...


Speakers are staying . I've put the Black Shadows on the bottom, and the V30's on the top, so now I get my cut and note definition at my height, and my balls feel the chunk of the Black Shadows. The audience will get the chunkier sound, as well, which I find to go over best on stage.

I use a 2x12 extension cab loaded with V30's along with my Rivera Hundred Duo 12 combo, which is loaded with Celestion 85 watters, and the combination is perfect, I would never even consider using the Rivera combo stand alone after hearing it this way!

The 5150 cab is really nice, it has rather a lot of mid compared to my Marshall 1960lead, lots of bottom end coming from the wood, its a very well made cab, weighs lots more than my marshall cab, sounds great, cuts through better than a marshall cab and doesnt have harsh highs so long as you have the eq right, it has a lot of mid and the upper mid if the eq on the amp is to bright can make you cut through too much and sound harsh, though some distorted chords lack the top end sparkle in the distortion compared to the marshall, though it doesnt really matter if you are playing metal, though for some reason i still love my marshall cab more, i dont actually own the 5150 cab, i bought the amp as a half stack, sold the cab to my other guitarist because i already had my marshall cab.

The marshall seems to have less mids but more top end
The 5150 cab is more balanced with rounded top but emphasis is on the middle frequency, this cab cuts through a lot, and i have to turn the resonance on the amp quite a bit less than what id use through the marshall cab, it has more bottom end thump.

All this info is based on a Peavey 5150 mk1, Lead channel.
