Value of Broken Crate G40CXL

Hi,
I have a Crate G40CXL 40-watt solid state amp that I inherited from my sister, which unfortunately is no longer working properly. When I plugged into the main input it was extremely noisy and would generate random loud squeals and noise. For the -6db input, it was working intermittently for a little while, but no longer.

My sense is that it probably just needs a good cleaning, but I don't have the technical know-how to pull it apart and give it the attention it needs. It also has a beat up power cord that has some chips out of the shielding. My question for you is, how much do you think it would be worth to spend getting it restored? Relatedly, what value should I ask for to sell it some someone who could clearn/restore and use it? Any advice you have is greatly apprecaited.

Thanks for the help! -Jamie P.

Re: Value of Broken Crate G40CXL

Spend $5 and get some electronics contact cleaner, spray the pots and turn them back and forth. Spray the jacks and work a guitar cable in and out of each jack a number of times.

If it's still misbehaving, dump it.

In working condition, expect to get about $50 tops. Really not worth anything.

Re: Value of Broken Crate G40CXL

does it have an effects loop

if so it probably had something plugged into the loop for a long time
this has caused the switching contacts to spread slightly
the howl you hear is the arc crossing the void

get a short patch cable

jump the effects loop

play loud

let me know what happens

EDIT

on a friends amp
he wanted to buy another output board for his Beringer Bass amp

the tab that made the mono connection from the head to the cab
had become spread and the cable was just loose
and noisey like you describe

if yours has access to the jack
it is similar to the one in a strat
and you can just push it back in to tighten it up
