ginormous, is it possible that you have developed a case of "tube envy?"

As stated previously, I started out on Ampegs; I had both an SVT w/twin 15's for my bass work and a VT-22 for my guitar gigs. No thanx, I won't take any bait for the "tube envy" jokes. My honey thinks I do just fine, and I agree.:naughty::cool2::fing2:

If it works for you, more power to ya but stop trying to convince folks that snobbery, technophobia and nostalgia are the only reasons people buy tube amps.

I acknowleged the sound of tube amps as the fundamental tone of the electric guitar many pages ago, but some people missed that. Those reasons you stated aren't the only ones, but those who buy for tone alone are a rare breed -- if you count yourself among them, cool.

In my previous line of work, I was encouraged to use peoples' fears and insecurities as footholds into getting them to purchase things, which is one of the significant reasons I'm no longer in retail. That's the experience I draw from, when I see the well-known names being marketed today. "Get the sound of (insert your guitar heroes here), and use Brand Q amps!" (Hidden subtext: "...or the other bands/musicians out there will murder you with tone and volume! Do you really want your masculinity to be challenged?")

probably wants to commit tube genocide. I know that if tubes ever go under I'll buy up all the ones I can so I'll have replacements!! But I don't see that happening, at least not within my lifetime.

One of my points is that we rarely see major changes happening "in (our) lifetime(-s)", until they occur. Sometimes change is sudden, cataclysmic and abrupt; sometimes it's slow, almost infinitesimally so. Those who think that things will stay one way or another for an entire lifetime didn't witness, or perhaps have forgotten, the changes that PC's, internet, cell phones, cable TV, etc. brought to the world within a few short years. I mean, before the VCR, if you missed your fave show, you were SOL.

For example, those of you who remember first-gen websites understand how graphics and photos used to appear on screen: choppy blocks of fuzzy colors, with finer and finer resolution every second or so, until the pictures were clear. That's what the developmental stages of SS amps are like today; they may not be able to sound exactly like tube amps now, but hang around for a while, they'll be much closer soon (as stated before, I estimate 5 or 10 years). Besides, they're not total crap, despite some suggestions to the contrary.

Come on, now. There's threads about active pickups on SDUGF! That was a rather crude technology years ago, and now what? Maybe not your cuppa tea, but there it is, undeniably hot sounds galore. If Seymour has the brains and the cojones to do that, then there's at least one more out there, working on things from the amp side.

BTW, I don't wish genocide on anyone. Long live life!

Dude, this is clearly a religious issue for you. We get it.

:omg::wrf::nono:
Please understand, that at no point was I attempting to "convert" anyone to SS. And there's no point in discussing this from a religious aspect, because we've seen what pain and suffering those kinds of conflicts can impose. I'm not going there, dude.

I played from a tube amp, and it died with fresh tubes in it. Did it change my mind about tube amps? It was a factor in that decision, yes. Do I hate those who think tubes are da bomb? No.

I don't hate. Life's too short, and I'm too tall.

And while I'm at it...
