van halen 1 sound duncan 59 or dimarzio vhpaf

Re: van halen 1 sound duncan 59 or dimarzio vhpaf

Huh. I played a Classic 50 2x12 in the store that just fell straight into AC/DC and VH2 rhythm tones. Don't remember what guitar I tried it with, though. I always regretted not having cash on hand to snag that amp. Wonder if it was stock... Salesman sneered at it when I asked to try it, then thought I'd switched to one of the Marshall combos when I bought strings afterwards.

I have a Crate Vintage Club 60 Combo that, regardless of what guitar I've used, has a very inherent "Van Halenish" sort of quality to it. I generally dime the tone pots, the presence and keep the bright and mid-boost circuits on and it has that mojo to it, on the overdrive channel. The clean channel is kind blah, but the hot channel really screams "Outta Love Again".

The idea that you "need" a Marshall is silly. There are so many amps out there and there are many roads that can lead you to that BROWN sort of tone, it's not even funny.

If i were on a budget and wanted a amp to do VH and beyond,
5150 combo- these are great if u know how to dial em in. Just ask vhoholic.
PV windsor- can sound plexi like for little coin. There is also the marshall MGfx dont laugh these can get very brown just check the youtube clips...

Re: van halen 1 sound duncan 59 or dimarzio vhpaf

I've considered the 800, but I like that the protube has a bit more gain on tap. And they can be had for < $300. With a family and all, I find it hard to justify too much money on an amp.

i have a brainstorm idea that will help u raise cash for a amp... SELL ME the NORTON AND DSD PU's! Lol

Yeah, I've considered a Windsor. They've gotten a lot of slack, but just replacing those awful JJ preamp tubes makes a world of difference with those. The store here in town has a 5150 210 combo and it smokes! They want WAAAAY too much for it though. It's seriously been sitting in that store since like 1993 at least. Sad but true.

Now there is but back in the 70s it was more limited.

There is something about a Plexi though and I had one back in the 70s but I couldn't wait to get rid of it and go to a 50 watt Marshall master volume combo.
No attenuators back in the 70s (well there were I suppose but not many used them) so the Plexi had to be run at volume levels where the gain would kick in and the volume wasn't really a big deal playing in clubs and rehearsing but I just got tired of carting the Plexi around and wanted something smaller.

EVH and his gear has a historical interest thing to it but everybody should really do their own thing gear wise and playing wise, Ed does.

I always thought that was the essence of what EVH was all about where u take ur main infulence and do ur own thing with it like he did with clapton. Sure EC played the blues and marshalls but other than that there was VERY LITTLE resemblence between EC and ED.

You mean 2x12 right?
They never made a 2x10 5150 combo. I paid $400 used and the amp was already tweaked from stock. Better tubes, biased right, etc. But even outta the box these were great. I like the lower wattage and the gain is smoother and the reverb. I use mine with a 4x12 marshall cab for high gain stuff and my slp for everything
else.

Yeah, Ed was pulling a lot of things from a lot of different places which I think anybody needs to do to eventually have their own sort of thing.

If someone just listens to EVH or Slash or whatever then it's pretty narrow and I don't think they can be anything else but a clone really.

Ed had played and knew a lot of Classical music and Jazz also before he even got to Clapton.
The classical tapping part of Eruption is there because Ed had been exposed to Classical music.

Slash is into Classical as well.
Someone might think Slash doesn't play classical but listen to the touches, the opening of Sweet Child of Mine is basically something like a music box and Slash's use of the harmonic minor which can sound classical but mix it with blues riffs like Slash does in the solo and some new sounding things can happen.

Has anyone tried the Traynor YCS amps? They seem pretty reasonably priced, and can run EL34s.

they are pretty good. Have u seen the BUGERA stuff? They make 5150,JSX,TRIPLE XXX and MARSHALL copies for a very affordable price. These are real good stock but are also very tweakable. Is that even a word? Lol

I've heard nightmares about reliability with those. I tried the 6262 at Sam Ash and I wasn't really impressed with it.

I really dig SLASH. His tone, style and attitude are from the same school as mine. I am NOT impressed with techno wizards like mike angelo. Slash says more in one note than MA does in 10,000 and more important slash can write a great song! Lol

Van Halen 3:16 -- For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, Edward so that whoever believes in him shall not suck at guitar but will forever be haunted by his tone.

hahahaha . . . this post just made skimming the whole thread worthwhile . . .

Nice! You'll have to share your secrets with me. I just couldn't get a good tone out of the one I tried.

Re: van halen 1 sound duncan 59 or dimarzio vhpaf

Yeah, with Slash you sort of know how the blues lick will finish, very sort of early 70s but with Ed it's often a strange ride through the blues lick with often the off beats emphasized and picked and swung from with the on beats being part of a legato thing although when you work it out it's really nothing more than a blues lick but it's the timing and what notes he's emphasizing.

So Ed sounded sort of new back in the 70s and half the time when I read things about Ed's so called tone it's really mostly about his playing.
Hendrix sounded new back in the 60s because no one was really playing like that in 1967 even though other guitarists were using a Strat and a Marshall.
Ed was totally committed and practicing a lot in the 70s and early 80s and in top form but other things took over as they do for everyone really.

I don't know how much EVH means to younger players, probably the same as what Hendrix meant to EVH fans in the 70s and 80s.

Apparently they did make a 2x10 because it's sitting right in Sparks Music here in Hutch. I was puzzled too. They didn't make many of them, but you can Google and find them.

I really heard the Clapton come out in the F.U.C.K album. Ed started going less "tappy-tappy" and more bends, vibrato and keeping it smooth as an evolution of his style. Frankly between 5150 and OU812, his solos just sounded the same song to song and I think he realized he needed to "reinvent" himself. Went back to basics.

Re: van halen 1 sound duncan 59 or dimarzio vhpaf

Ed's old tone is like j lo's ass to me. It is BIG,ROUND,FIRM and very CAPTIVATING! Is it any wonder i want to grab a piece of dat? Lol
