To me, the VH tone is all about a vintage Marshall tone cranked up with gain that's beyond stock vintage. I grew up on VH, and jam those riffs and licks on a 59, C-5, Seth, CC, you name it.....I get a VH tone regardless....any era, depending on my amp settings. On a JMP Marshall, 5150, or my Bogner's plexi channel.....those are the determining factors that display either the early, mid, or later VH years.
59, C-5, or CC on a cranked Marshall tone will get you there, so there's no need to pay more for the EVH, in my opinion.
