I would say roll the gain back about 25 or 30 percent more and you might start getting a better vintage vibe. It ain't bad at all, it is just a much more modern take on the old sound. VHholic has some very good 5150 clips, might be worth checking out. The playing is just fine.

Not bad at all.. It just sounds like you are using more Gain then EVH did to me.. But close on the lead..etc.. Very good playing though! :-)

I used Vholics settings as a base. Rolled the gain back from 5 to 4 and added some highs. I think the major difference is he used a marshall cab with 4 greenbacks in it. They probably add some high end, roll off some lowend and add that Crunch they're so famous for...

I agree it has too much gain. But when I lower it I lose some of the singing quality when playing solos...

Yup, that would probably work... I have the master (post gain) on 5 for this clip. If I lowered the gain and cranked it past 7 it might be closer...

Yep, just roll off the gain and try to tighten up the overall sound. I think the gain is the main issue, however. Anyway, good luck!

As much as I love these EVH threads,stop worrying about playing Ed's music like Ed would play it.I wanna hear you play the same thing like RCM78 would play it.You've got some great chops,but it feels like you're holding back on your own style to capture Ed.Your tone is a little thick on the gain for classic EVH,but fun to listen to nonetheless.Keep up the great playing and remember-Less Ed and more you-it will make all the difference :)

Hey RCM. I think your clip sounds great! For my personal taste i agree with some of the other guys, i would lower the gain but hey if you like it that's all that matters. I find that the 5150 sounds real tight on the low end if you keep the bass and resonance on 6 and the gain somewhere between 5 and 6 with the use of a low output PAF style pickup. A few good ones are the SD 59b, SD custom EVH, or the voodoo 59. There are others but i can't really think of them right now.

Thanks man, I actually have the gain on 4, low 6, mid 4, high 5, and res 6.

I'm using a wolfgang which has pretty hot pups. Actually none of my guitars have low output pickups... but the wolfgang does sound thicker then any of the others...

I might be able to get closer with my Kramer stagemaster. It has a Custom Custom in the bridge.
