Vanity Vote Revisited, Back In Black!!!

Last week I asked for some advice as to what I should do about the Zero Fret Nut, pickup covers, Switch Tip, & a few other little minor cosmetic changes to my Double Cut L.P. SPECIAL. It seems that the general consensus was to revert back to black & after some thought it became my thinking as well...

The cream covers looked alright but they kinda clashed with the Amber speed knobs & they didn't fit very well either? The Gibson covers have much more rounded corners where these were more square. I figured it was nothing that a file wouldn't fix but even after I got them to fit semi-correctly they wouldn't adjust correctly, it was like they were getting hung up on something??? I'm not sure what it was, I couldn't see any reason why they would not fit but my side to side tilt was off? It was just a tiny bit off but that little bit wreaked havoc with my height settings!!!

So back to black it was!!!

I put the black covers back on, I kept the Amber speed knobs, & (Just For Ace) I kept the cream switch tip with the black background, LOL!!! As for the nut, I changed the stock brass Z.F.N. to a Graph Tech Adjustable TUSQ Zero Fret Nut, which is absolutely amazing BTW!!! If you own a 2015 Gibby you really owe it to yourself to get one!!!

It's improved the guitar's tuning stability 10 fold!!! It's also improved the quality of tone & my sustain quite a bit!!! Before when you played open cords and such you could actually hear the difference between the strings that were ringing off the frets & the strings that were ringing off the nut? Now it sounds like any other TUSQ nut (F-ing great) and looks pretty amazing too!!! The TUSQ nut looks a lot more like a regular nut, where as Gibson's design kinda just looked like it was missing...

Graph Tech TUSQ

Re: Vanity Vote Revisited, Back In Black!!!

I didn't even know Graph-Tech made something like that. I don't know why new Gibsons just don't put the Graph-Tech on them instead.

The world would certainly be a much happier place if they did!!! Seeing as though they're sending out the Titanium replacements for free to rectify the issues they created by using Brass in the first place I think they would have been better off striking a deal with Graph Tech for these!

They have to be spending around $5 per unit for the replacements? Titanium is expensive and difficult to work with so if you add up the cost of the metal stock & labor you probably come in right about where Graph Tech would sell in bulk? I'm sure if they bought in bulk the TUSQ would cost about the same as the Titanium & it actually works, which has its benefits!!!

That would suggest that Gibson are capable of quality decision-making...

Didn't realize the Creams had fitting issues...

Guess it wasn't meant to be.
