hey all , this is my first post here, was poking around and saw the Vaseline post, and had to join to give my own 2cents, started a new thread because other was a hundred long and thought this was important and wanted to make sure that people would see it.

first let me give a qualifier , i am a builder of custum furniture, not wall-mart stuff but really high end stuff , the kind that people with to much money buy to impress their friends, god bless 'em ,they've paid for my harley, house and guitars.
real important stuff at end
lets start with this , all the fancy oils , conditioners and crap that fender and others sell is just that , crap. all you need is plain old mineral oil, you can get it at home depot or your local hardware store , clear plastic bottle with green lable called WOOD PRESERVATIVE on lable , costs about $3.00, and will last 4ever if u use it right. theres other kinds but thats what i use,
MUST BE FOR WOOD!! other kinds are too thick . just wet a q-tip ,put it on let i sink in, if it sucks right in put it on again , once its taken all it can hold , maybe once a year after, unless your in the desert . you don't have to dump it on like Ive seen the pro's at guitar center do.

as for Vaseline, all your doing is packing the pores of the wood, its way to thick to be absorbed, and by blocking up the pore the wood cant breath and an unfinished piece of wood needs to do so , so put that stuff away.

now this is the important thing, do not use any oil made of , or containing anything organic, like peanut oil , even lemon or orange oil, on an unfinished piece of wood, organic materials have a tendency to rot .( i know, wood is organic but its not quite the same and this post is already to long) it may never do so for u , but knowing it could should keep it off your $5000 les paul
don't know much but i know wood, not saying my ways the best way, but it is one of the right ways

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the informative post.

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

I use his & hers KY jelly. I put the hers formula on the guitar and I put the his formula on me. That way I can play slide guitar one handed and still have a hand free to do keyboard fills.

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

I was gonna oil my neck, but i got high.
I was gonna clean that gunk off the frets, but I got high.
Now my axe smells like poop, and I know why, hey hey!

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

Welcome and thanks for the info!

Is rosewood oil OK to use?

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

welcome

thanks for the info

what do you recommend to clean fingerboards before using mineral oil

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

your welcolm for the info,

answer to SOSOMETHING's question:
yes rosewood oil is o.k, it is organic to anybody saying aha,
and there are others that are ok too, don't want to freak everyone out about it,lemon oil ok , could spend a week writing whats good whats not, i use a lot of different ones, most are organic based but will not rot.

answer to tone4days question:

i use a NON DETERGENT SOAP to clean dirty wood , just look at supermarket lables you'll find some , sorry but i'm spacing what we've got at the shop.
dilute soap , 75% water, little less maybe, hard to say, we just do it if u know what i mean, use a soft tooth brush and go to town, if your making a lot of bubbles you've got to much soap, and don,t soak your fretboard, do some half dry cleanings, take a white towel and wipe , see if dirt shows up on it , if so brush again, would'nt go too crazy though there's only so clean it will get, let dry , oil it

hope i've given some usefull info

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

OK, what about cleaning up poly finishes? Like getting dirt off, etc...is there a 'furniture' equivalent to what they sell as 'guitar polish'?

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

Lemon Pledge
we need more Le-mon Pled-ge
we are not responsible for that, you should bring that from home
no.....no

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

OK .poly finish , now we are talking about a sealed finished product, the pores of the wood are all sealed, meaning that oiling won't achieve anything, but that's OK the finish will retain some moisture in the wood but again unless your living in death valley , wood will be okay, of coarse still oil fretboard and all , because **** does happen , finish or unfinished , two identical pieces of wood under the exact same conditions can go in completely opposite directions!
there's some few hundred year old pieces of furniture that are in perfect shape , and others a few months old that have completely fallen apart, and those real old ones were painted with paint made out of milk, and polished with animal fat, which make the stay away from organic substances sound silly
as for cleaning a poly finish , or any other lacquer or varnishes,(this doesn't apply to some ,but i don't think there used on guitars) use a NON DETERGENT SOAP , you can use a little more soap on a finished product, but on poly's you don't want to use a brush, use a soft cloth , and wring it out!! you don't want water getting into neck pocket and sitting there, probably not good, definatly don't want it dripping under pick guard into the electronics

as for polishing poly, the stuff sold buy guitar dealers is the same as the stuff at home depo, just a mater of price and how shiny you want it , i myself prefer a liquid , or paste wax , don't like the spray an stuff , some of it looks OK ,but i feel it doesn't leave much of a protective layer on the product, its just way to watery for my liking , paste wax is the best, like a bee's wax, leave's a nice shine, and a good protective layer, only problem is it a pain in the ass, getting it out of the nook and cranny's, so on a guitar I'd go with a liquid, old English(the wax not the beer) is good , if you cant find the bottle , even the spray is OK, but the guitar center stuff is just fine too, ernie ball has come out with some impregnated cloths, got a sample in a guitar magazine, actually used it on my les paul, shined real nice, but again in my work i'm looking for protective shell as well as shine. i use a bee's wax on my guitars , but as i said its a pain to clean up.
if you go of guitar stuff, just check label to see that it is safe on poly or nitro finishes , I'm not going to advocate any substance 'cept the bee's wax but see the pain in the ass statements.

feel like im teaching shop class

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

Thanks for the info. I think we kind of need a shop class on this topic. It looks like all of us have heard and tried different things. The only thing that sounds weirder to me than Vaseline is food/meat grease. When I started the other thread, I was mainly interested in how to make a dirty unfinished maple fretboard look presentable.

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

wouldnt do this to rosewood . but on unfinished maple neck, try some 600 grit sand paper , go with the grain, 600 grit will wear out quick so keep rotating new paper, if its realy nasty and sticky use some acetone(nail polish remover)first with a q-tip, not too much , scrub it hard, then give it a sand,

IMMEDIATELY OIL FRET BOARD, acetone will dry stuff out like you wouldn't believe

Re: vasiline ! no!! no!!! no!!!!

Sticky this after we remove B2D's extraordinary comments lol
