Vernon Reid's rig rundown - WTF

I mean seriously. Pick an amp or two, maybe a pedal board or two. But an ipad, a kemper, two boogie amps, a combo, and about 800 floor effects? There's no way he could know what's going on with everything. It's got to be just step on something and see what happens.

I've always thought his tone was horrible anyway, more gear might give him a better shot.

Re: Vernon Reid's rig rundown - WTF

Slightly off topic, that PRS prototype he's lugging around looks sexy as hell.

I like it when that interviewer just grabs his other axe at will. "Mind if I put my paws all over this custom axe that pays all your bills?"

I can't stand that interviewer. I like the old Rig Rundown videos that Rebecca Dirks, Chris Kies, and Shawn Hammond did. Chris Kies does one every once in a while. John Bollinger seems so fake. Every video he does he acts like he's so blown away by their gear. The guy who does all the metal and punk rig rundowns (Perry something or another) asks the dumbest questions in the world and doesn't know anything about gear (in one he even told the guy he was interviewing that he knows nothing about the Axe Fx's or the Kempers).

/rant.

When I saw Living Colour perform in a tiny Cardiff club on their 2009 European tour, Reid had a patch of floor about five feet square between pedalboards, amps and MacBook-on-a-stick. Even carrying four basses, Wimbish had plenty of room to move about in.

Yeah... I'm not too sure about John either. He and I actually played on the same album many moons ago (we're from the same town in MT). But there's just something about him that rubs me wrong in his interviews and especially in his PG column. I much prefer Pete Thorn's style of.. everything. Pete's got genuine rock star playing, creds, looks, etc... but all of my online interactions with him and all of the interactions that I've seen between he and others on the forums -- he comes across as very friendly and down-to-earth.

In regards to Vernon Reid's tone... I've honestly never even been the slightest bit curious as to how he gets his tone (it's that unremarkable to my ears).

Someone made a comment on a Rig Rundown video that John Bollinger seems like the kind of guy who's your dad's best friend at work but then goes home and beats his wife for burning dinner.

On topic, I've only really listened to Cult of Personality but I know that Vernon Reid has been into huge spaceship rigs for a while now. I don't know what it really offers him over a regular guitar/ pedal/ amp setup or a straight modeler setup, besides eight hours of setting up gear. I feel like a lot of this stuff is for just one sound in a 10 second clip for a song.

Yeah... I totally get that vibe. The funny thing is... I've always kept that to myself (amazing, since I've always been a very outspoken kind of guy), because I wondered if my feelings about him were somehow personal because he lives on Music Row in Nashville, and I work a regular day job in the sticks of MT. But it's interesting to see others who don't know him at all, getting that vibe from him as well. The people who's album that he and I both played-on have never had anything negative to say about him (and they are pretty real). But I've always consoled my "nobody" self with the fact that they chose to put my name on the album cover as a featured artist, and he only got mentioned in the liner notes. I gotta take whatever solace I can get. :D

Re: Vernon Reid's rig rundown - WTF

Someone get this guy an Axe-Fx.

I kinda like John Bollinger. I feel like I would enjoy shooting the breeze with him. I can't stand that Perry guy though. Rig Rundowns haven't had anybody I'm interested in hearing about for a long time now.

Re: Vernon Reid's rig rundown - WTF

I've always liked Vernon's playing. Very ear-twisting and unique.

Re: Vernon Reid's rig rundown - WTF

Even John Petrucci sized down from his crazy 90s rack systems, and it's not like he isn't a gear nut anymore.
Vernon is just crazy, man.

Re: Vernon Reid's rig rundown - WTF

Perry is alright. I'd rather have a guy asking what things do that he should know than a guy who's faking being amazed at everything. Chris is definitely the best they have right now, I wish he'd do more.

And there's room for that.

Yeah, last I saw he's using 4 1x12 cabs, a main and backup Mesa Triaxis, an Axe Fx, a few pedal, and a Crybaby rack wah, and a couple Mesa power amps. All of that goes into one rack. Now that he has his signature amp that might have changed but even still, the fact that John Petrucci had his entire rig in a 16U rack is Astonishing :bigthumb:

Rebecca Dirks was always my favorite, and not just because she was a total 10. She actually asked great questions like what kind of pickups are in those guitars. In the Coheed interview, when she noticed that Claudio's guitars just had bridge pickups replaced, she actually asked why. With Perry, he just asks really stupid questions like "Do you ever just turn on all your effects and see what happens?" But I can definitely handle him over Bollinger.

Doug Wimbash seems to also believe in the Yngwie logic of "More is More". He has like 4 Eventide H9 units.

Re: Vernon Reid's rig rundown - WTF

I didn't realize that Living Color had even made that much money for him to afford all of that gear.
