Versatile bridge humbucker for Epiphone LP

Re: Versatile bridge humbucker for Epiphone LP

I never found the split 59 sound very pleasant or useful at all. Rewire your switch to split to the Custom coil for a MUCH more satisfying tone in your hybrid (and easier to get to than having to switch two p/p pots).

Re: Versatile bridge humbucker for Epiphone LP

You may be right, I maybe should try to rewire. Anyway, the important thing is that in full humbucker mode, man, this pickup is pure fire in this guitar.
Took it today to rehearsal, and it blew everybody´s minds. My bandmates were really impresed. All of them wanted to play with this guitar. In this moment, thanks to the Custm/59 hybrid, this cheap Epiphone sounds better than my gibson LP Sig. T with 57/57+. Tuners are soft, bridge and tailpiece are cheapo, frets feel ok but are a bit low, fret wood is umperfect... But right now this beast just sings. Best sounding guitar I have ever played. An old cheap Epi LP with just the right investment. Even the looks improved with the uncovered bobins.
I felt in love again with this guitar, which was almost forgotten for the last couple of years. Now it feels it will worth to upgrade tuners, bridge and tail piece, as tuning stability during a set is the only issue now, and will replace the knobs too. Stock ones are a pain when it comes to activate push pulls, and gold speed knobs look much better too.
It got me even thinking that, if now she sounds much better than the gibson, the gibson could be also improved even further if I cna find the right pickups. However, it is a much brighter natural sounding guitar, so probably a different one will be needed.

Have WLHs, Pearly Gates and Slash sets in Les Pauls and they all sound great, and I would classify them as good all rounders that work great for a number of styles. I keep going back and forth over which I prefer but much of it depends on the guitar inself. The pearly gates are in an Epiphone and really suit that guitar.

I once had a JB and 59n in a Les Paul and although I liked the 59 in the neck the JB sounded too stiff in that guitar. They were replaced with the WLHs which sound better in both positions for that guitar.

Re: Versatile bridge humbucker for Epiphone LP

As you have discovered, Epi LPs are really great guitars. They just need a little mod work to get them there. They have good bodies and necks, and the newer ones even have pretty decent pups, but with a little TLC replacement of certain components they can become your #1 player.

Here's what I do to my Epi's...in order:
1. replace pups with Duncans,
2. replace tuners, usually with Planet Waves locking, self-trimming tuners,
3. replace nut with bone compensated nut (I make them to fit my own needs),
4. replace bridge
5. replace electronics

Re: Versatile bridge humbucker for Epiphone LP

Already replaced pups with duncans and all electronics.
Thinking about tuners, bridge and nut. However, current ones are "decent" (not great). It is very likely that I will put some locking tuners in at some point. I have more doubts about bridge and tail piece, I am abit afraid of buying something with the wrong measuremente or that will not be a real improvement, just a waste. And those are the ones I can do myself at this point. Nut will require help from a pro, or a learning process, so it will take longer until I decide to do it.

Re: Versatile bridge humbucker for Epiphone LP

Replacing a nut is an easy process. Making one is not (especially a compensated nut). But you can buy even compensated nuts that are an easy retro fit.
