Hi to all, I am new in the forum. I need help to decide for new pickups, currently I own Schecter with EMG 81 and 85, but I want to switch to passive pups. But i cant decide what pickup I want, I look for a really tight sound and heavy sound, but at the same time I want versality. I hope all of you cand help me to decide. I am not new in the guitar, i have been playing for a least 11 years. Thanks to all.

Black Winters, hands down. They can do anything, but excell at metal.

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

+1 on black winters, alternative is custom 5 alnico/59 combo
Black winters are great crisp pickups, articulate in all tunings but may be abit harsh if you already use a super bright amp but you can’t really go wrong with them
Custom 5 alnico and 59 set are awesome

lol everyone keeps making me wanna try a bw set. dimarzio titan is great especially for the money, its a less extreme bkp aftermath. id look into bkp juggernauts, they r amazing pickups. ive also heard good things about the nailbomb and the ragnarok. if ur coming from actives, maybe a bkp blackhawk set? What styles do u play?

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

I was never interested in the Black Winters, but then a friend put them in his guitar, and I have to say, they are really versatile, and don't feel stiff or sterile at all.

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

Honestly, SD could release a set identical to the BWs, but in a more traditional color scheme and advertise it as a set designed for maximum versatility and call them "Swiss Armybuckers" and people would buy them. The only people that would notice they were just a copy of the BWs is us at the SDUGF.

I am playing mainly metal actually, all kind of metal really, but mostly metalcore and thrash metal. But like I said before i like to have the possibility to have son good cleans, distortion, etc...

The Black Winters have ceramic magnets and the Sentient/Pegasus have alnico 5 magnets.

bkp juggernaut set is amazing. nothing quite like it. insane versatility. it is a bit clinical, which might not be what u want for thrash and metalcore (except for the active pickup guys). ive heard good stuff about the ragnarok. They were designed to take some active qualities and blend that with passive expressiveness and dynamics into one aggressive passive. The neck was designed to be fat in the treble while tightening the flubby lows that come with that territory traditionally. also maybe a ceramic nailbomb bridge. However, bkps are expensive as all hell and unless u need super chord clarity, u can get away with high output duncans. Duncan custom is good for thrash, as is the nazgul. havent played the bw, but it seems like everyones gone absolutely ape**** over them. in the dimarzio camp, maybe crunch lab/liquifire or sub the crunch lab for a d activator, titan or an illuminator

The bkp is a good option, but like you said, they are expensive, and I dont have the money right know for those. I notice a detail with the active pickups, but I dont know if I am the only person that notice that. When I activate my overdrive pedal, I feel like is not working properly with my actives, somehow it just make a tiny difference. But 3 days ago I try a Jackson kelly with duncans in it, and I used the same overdrive and the difference in sound was amazing, the articulation, dinamics, everything was awesome, I was shock with that, I didnt have the same effect with my active pickups, so it was an eye opener for me. I dont know why happened that.

I really like the Black Winter's too. You also can't go wrong with a simple Custom/59 combo. Split it and you can do anything you want.

Non SD I REALLY love the Motor City Afwayu. Aggressive but really versatile too.

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

And what about the hot rodded set?

Jazz is good for speed metal, JB is finicky and doesn't like short scale guitars. There are plenty of people who swear by the JB, and there are just as many that swear at it. I find people who play live often love the JB, people who don't have to play behind other instruments hate it.

But one things for certain, the Jazz/JB combo will always be the best combo for a Telegib.

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

Don't even think about using the Mayhem set for metal. Too much low end, too much sizzle on top, too much chunk and scream in general [emoji12]

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

I have the Pegusus/Sentient set. I love em, although no weakness is their greatest strength. Must add, my experience is very limited compared to many here. Some say they are somewhat scooped in the mids, but I just love how there is no brittle harshness. I am installing my Alt 8 with a Demon in the neck. Have a shiny new set of Black Winters sitting here, I just ran out of guitars. Need more. I love my JB set BTW. I think for screaming leads and tons of harmonics, tough to beat. Sounds 80s to me. The Pegasus is more "polite", but in a good way. I dont play that much funk on cleans, but the Pegasus absolutely gave me the best sounds I have had yet in that style. Not overly sterile, just pumps out what you want and how you set your amp.
