versatile pickups for Metal in general

Do I detect sarcasm? LOL

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

Hi to all, I am new in the forum. I need help to decide for new pickups, currently I own Schecter with EMG 81 and 85, but I want to switch to passive pups. But i cant decide what pickup I want, I look for a really tight sound and heavy sound, but at the same time I want versality. I hope all of you cand help me to decide. I am not new in the guitar, i have been playing for a least 11 years. Thanks to all.

I'm kind of shocked that I haven't seen them mentioned yet (unless I missed something), but the Alpha/Omega set sounds right up your alley. It's perfect for metal, but I don't feel like I'm sacrificing on clean and mid-gain tones at all, which I haven't quite found in any other set I've tried.

Can't top the sh6 Duncan Distortion for clarity, versatility, and phenomenal Metal tones and harmonics.

Alt-8 is another unmentioned choice for metal players esp if you downtune.

The JB for metal is hit and miss. Yes it can do it, and the leads and high end sparkle are fantastic. However, I always found it lacked the chug and low end thunk that I like. I like tight, but not too tight, but the JB can be a bit loose. This is why I like the Motor City Afwayu, it has the tight low end chug with a great high end sparkle. It is JBish, but tighter and more articulate. This shouldn't be suprising though as it was developed for Cantrell and he used JB's before he used the Motor City.

I am also intrigued by the new Mustaine set, because it is supposed to be a tighter JB. If you are playing mainly metal, look on the used market for a PRS Tremonti. It's great for anything metal or heavy.

BKP, I don't know. I have a Nailbomb set and I don't love them. It is the A5 version though, maybe I need to try the ceramic. They are very VERY clean pick ups, almost to the point where you think they are sterile. They aren't though and are very articulate. However, they do have a very particular sound and I find myself gravitating towards the more traditional sounding pups. (SD, PRS, MC, etc.) Again, not bad, just a preference, but others have said this about BKP.

i dont think ive ever heard "duncan distortion" and "clarity" in the same sentence without "lacks" in between. Honestly most duncans are lacking in that department when compared to dimarzios and bkps

I really like the Black Winter's too. You also can't go wrong with a simple Custom/59 combo. Split it and you can do anything you want.

Non SD I REALLY love the Motor City Afwayu. Aggressive but really versatile too.

The Custom (SH-5) is an insane pickup. It's perfect for all things metal. It gives you a heavy chug, stays tight under high gain and has an amazing lead tone. The '59 (SH-1) would certainly be a very good match for it in the neck. The tone profile is somewhat similar in the sense that both are scooped and have quite some low end, so it's easier to find EQ settings that work for both pickups. Also, the Custom needs a lot of mids to be dialed in on the amp for it to really shine. Since the '59 is also scooped, it will benefit from added mids as well.

Both are super versatile and organic sounding pickups and work well with a lot of different amps. That combo will be particularly brutal for metalcore and will do thrash metal very well, just dial back the bass and gain a bit on the amp.

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

Well, it all depends on if you are playing through a Fender Frontman 15 or Mesa Triple Recto...

Frontman 15 = No pickup will work
Triple Rector = Seths will pretty dang all around metal

That said - having no idea how to answer, the Custom is a great general metal pup. Distortion/Black Winter if you metal is of the harder/harsher variety. 59/Custom Hybrid or JB if it is the milder/poppier type.

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

Semi thread hi jack but may be pertinent. Can a 59/WLH combo work for metal like a 59/Custom 5?

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

Hello to everyone, I have been a little busy lately, so I didnt find to much time to answer. I have been reading all your suggestions and I have been listening to every pickup that all of you recommend me. First I was checking the Pegasus/Sentient set, I have to say that I think that they are a great pair of pickups, but I feel they lack a little of punchiness, maybe the youtube audio compression is playing with me, but thats what I hear.

Then I listen to the Custom sh5/59, they suprise me quite a lot. I have been comparing these set with the Dimarzio Crunch lab/Liquidfire that also I think is a really well balance set.

Something that I forgot to tell , is that I have a Schecter C1 platinum , Mahogany body and Rosewood neck. I like aesthetics of the Pegasus/sentient set, I feel that they will match up really well with this guitar, But the lack of punchiness get me backwards.

I have those sets in my list mainly because they are affordable for my buck. If all of you have any suggestions they are well recieve.

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

Well, what you go with? For me, the Pegasus is the "punchiest" pup I have, with the possible exception of the ALT8

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

The Pegasus/Sentient is pretty punchy. I still think it is one of the best sets for many different kinds of metal, but can do cleaner styles, too.

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

I just swapped out a 81 with a emg 57 and it seems more versatile while still being metal approved.

Re: versatile pickups for Metal in general

I'm going to side with team Pegasus on this one. Provided you've got a modern cascading-gain amp (or a modeler that simulates such), it's the best metal pickup Duncan makes IMO. Excellent clarity while retaining a nice warmth, no weird honks spikes or harshness unlike most 44 AWG pickups. It sounds almost like a perfected SuperD, with less compression (and less output) and more articulation.
