vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

Exactly the point, my fine, level headed friend.*

*name the movie reference.

As for the question at hand, I like vertical cabs because the top speaker is clearer in my ears on stage, for my own monitoring purposes.

the movie reference: detroit rock city?

subject at hand: dr. z's website has a little on this in their description for the z best cab since it's designed to work either way

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

Yeah, but the difference they're describing has mostly to do with the interaction of their port with the floor.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

My Dr. Z Z-Best 2x12 is both a vertical and a horizontal cab and I've found that in the horizontal position I have more trouble hearing myself, but I get a bit more bass response (could be a mental stigma though) and in the horizontal position I get more clarity and I can monitor myself more easily. I tend to switch it back and forth depending on the gig I'm on. When I'm on a quieter gig or a gig when I need a more bottom friendly sound I flip it horizontal, when I need to hear myself over a loud band and need to cut through, I put it vertical.

I can't prove that the positions make a difference or if I'm simply EQ'ing it and listening differently based on how well I can monitor myself during live situations.

Sling Blade.

"Some folks calls it a Keiser blade, but I call it a sling blade. Mmmm Hhhmmmm."

The quote in the other post is from the scene where Doyl gets his band together, and Co. Bruce Hampton confuses the heck out of John Ritter's character.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

the tonality of 1 2x12" is different or similar than 2 1x12"?

sorry i know this thread is pretty much done but i figured id reply

the way i had this explained to me is imagine a 2x12 with a baffle in it. doesnt change sound at all.

now imagine 2 1x12's next to each other. you could say its the same size as a 2x12 just with 2 baffles (or one thick baffle) in between. doesnt change the sound at all.

now imagine if you just placed 2 1x12's on either side of the amp or in opposite corners of the room. doesnt change sound at all. 2 1x12's sound like 1 2x12 because theyre the same, as long as the speakers are the same and the volume of 2 1x12's = volume of one 2x12 then theres no difference. just though id explain this in case someone else ends up reading this thread with the same question.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

I think I would like a slanted vertical 2x12
Maybe with a 15 in the bottom

I may just build me one

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

Turn it on its side and find out?

Although many "verticals" are really actually "oversize", on account of a regular turned 212 being no place to perch a head on

Some have reduced depth though, I assume to compensate for the greater 2-dimensional space.
IIRC Mesa verts are only 12" deep instead of their usual 14+", so probably about the same internal space as their standard recto 212.

The Horizontal cab is 14 1/2" deep, the Vertical is 14 1/2" on the bottom and slants to 11 3/4" on top. The Horizontal is 17 1/2"H×30 1/8"W and the Vertical is 27 7/8"H×23 5/8"W, so if you turn the Horizontal cab sideways its 2 1/4" taller, but 6 1/8" narrower than the Vertical cab. If you Google Mesa Boogie cab dimensions, there is a PDF from 2012 that has H×W×D and weight of all of their heads and cabs that were in the line up that year.

Re: vertical vs horizontal 2x12 cab?

I’ve got a horizontal Splawn and a vertical Victory.

I like how the vertical cab put the head closer to you for adjustments, and the baffle is angled slightly back to disperse more sound toward your head. The size and volume of the 2x12 with some of the ergonomics of the 4x12.

Yet they leave out internal space. (?) ,,,,,must be proprietary,,,,and I'm sure not smart enough to calculate all that either.
Looks like the vertical would be bigger internally, but not by quite as much as it might visually seem. That slant portion takes some away too.
Looks like the mesa vertical might be close to the same internal space as my Avatar 212.

Hardly any brands broadcast the airspace so no knock on Mesa.
