Very cool pedal shootout

Let it B
Man some of those modded pedals sound like @$$. BOR/SOH def are the two best sounding pedals to my ears- the rest are buzzy/farty.

Re: Very cool pedal shootout

the whole test, eh. kinda cool. the white noise comparison at the end though, that was definitely cool. personally, i kinda like a thinner, buzzier pedal a little more because my guitars already have a very thick midrange, and so do the amp models that i use on my vox ad15vt.

Re: Very cool pedal shootout

That's a great vid Jeff. Thanks for posting.

If you think about it you can really pick a test like that apart. Setting those pedals to a the tested sound can be so subjective.

I like the Son of Hyde and the Rat. I like something a bit more crisp, but not to crisp.

SRS is right. The noise test at the end is the best of the test.

Re: Very cool pedal shootout

I don't know how you rig something like that, to be honest. How do you set all the other pedals to be just SLIGHTLY crappier than your own? How can you be certain that your opinion of what sounds good is in the same ballpark as a (pseudo?) random group of guitarists you bring into the demo? I'm sure there are good and bad tones the can be dialed in from each pedal, but nothing in the demo says, "Hey, they're cheating!"

I think the video does its job. It takes pedals with pretty good reputations and puts them in a row and says, "What do you think?" It got my attention, because I thought the Son of Hyde sounded very good. And I think Zachary Vex should probably be pretty proud of his work as well. If I'm in the market for a distortion pedal, I'll be sure to think about the SoH or the Jekyll and Hyde.

I thought the DS-1 sounded pretty bad, and I thought the MetalZone sounded terrible. I kind of liked the Rat, though. It was more modern sounding to my ears, but not in a bad way, just different.

i think that modded rat had a huuuuge sounding midrange compared to the other pedals. personally, i didn't like the way the SoH sounded, it had really coudy/muddy lows and mids compared to the rest of the pedals. granted, aside from the zvex they all had buzzier tones, but that can be dialed out with the tone controls. my favorite tone out of those was probably the mxr though to be honest.

Re: Very cool pedal shootout

What surprised me most was how terrible I found the Satchurator to sound. I'd heard good things about this pedal, but it was HORRENDOUS in that video.

And SRS, I have to agree with you. The MXR/CAE sounded really good. When you wrote that, I thought, "MXR? How did I miss that?" Sorry, that pedal really doesn't look like an MXR box.

Re: Very cool pedal shootout

Well, the Son of Hyde was certainly in the best position in the lineup .......... I mean, it really only had to beat the Rat. The final Boss pedal could not have been considered a serious contender.

That said, adding noise reduction was probably a clever idea ..........

I wonder what the cost to tone that noise reduction has.

Re: Very cool pedal shootout

It is a BS test.....no pedal sounds great through the same amps....or speakers...
Or guitar.....
It is pretty useless.

Of course one pedal may sound like ass through a certain amp and speakers and may sound great through another. Thats not what they were doing. For showing the basic timbre and tone of each pedal compared to the other, it was a GREAT test.

Lot of paranoia and conspiracy theories around these forums anymore. yeesh.:banghead:

I'd disagree... its not entirely useless. Yeah, not all pedals sound great with all guitars and amps but IMO its fairly equivalent to what one would encounter at a typical guitar shop on a typical day.

I dunno about you, but usually I take a single guitar and pick an amp for the duration of tests when I go shopping. Some pedals make the cut, others don't and get bounced out after about 5 minutes of knob twisting.

Truthfully, I think that vid is a pretty good representation of the sound of each pedal. I've never liked the DS1... even modded they sound krappy and thin. I also had an old RAT, like an '85 small box for a while and I never found the magic in that. Buzzy and raspy, I'd kick it in and my sound would get smaller, not bigger. Same thing with the Satch box... scooped and buzzy and small.

Though, sometimes buzzy and small is just what's needed!

That said, it'd have been interesting to hear the BOR and the Visual pedal in an A/B since they were the top contenders... but whatever. Its close enough.

From there 'ya gotta go out and play 'em...

Re: Very cool pedal shootout

hahahaha

Yeah, I hear 'ya.

Back in January or so I did "shootout" of 3-4 dirt boxes and ended up coming home with a ZVex Distortron. Used a Tele and a Twin... thing is that I had played all of my candidates many times with many guitars and amps, just had to pick one to add to my board. Probably spent all of 30-40 minutes at the guitar shop.

But yah, it is great entertainment... and at least slightly edumacational for the kids that don't have a well stocked shop nearby.

Re: Very cool pedal shootout

it would be cool to hear that rack of pedals thru whatever amp the visual sound crew chose, then ran an a/b with no pedals and a dry marshall amp.
