Diocletian

I'd like to flesh this out into something longer, it only lasts like 30 seconds just now but I really like the sound I've got going. Reminds me of Burzum's weird atmospheric keyboard stuff, certainly very much influenced by that here.

Let me know your thoughts on the tone and overall feel please? :14:

That could be a nice heavy metal intro. I hear that feedback volume swell into a big power chord crunch riff coming in! Metallica Black Album...

Re: Very short acoustic piece

not bad, sounds like playing around with a minor cord or two, it would be worth making it as an intro for sure...

man i totally hear that, but without the volume swell happening; more in the fashion of "battery", ya kno? do it diocletian!!!!

Re: Very short acoustic piece

Ha ha, thanks guys. I'm not sure about the intro idea, I was planning on doing a full song like this but...hell, everything I do normally turns to metal at some point anyway.

Re: Very short acoustic piece

I kinda get the flavor from the intro to rock bottom by KISS in my head when I hear it... make it into something amazing!!

Re: Very short acoustic piece

Hmmm. In my humble opinion the key changes from section to section make it feel disjointed. What key are you in for the intro then the next part?

Doh! I didn't think anyone would notice that! :eyecrazy:
The problem is, the acoustic was recorded in Eb, but I don't have an electric tuned to that and I haven't had time to setup any of my guitars since the one I'd be doing has a Floyd, so, I just made do with a standard tuned electric.
I'm gonna do one, maybe two of my guitars today and get them tuned to Eb so any further versions of this song will not be disjointed.

Again,
doh! And thanks for your close attention! :1:

Re: Very short acoustic piece

Okay, I need to say I have no idea at all about musical theory. I just play whatever seems to sound right.
I retuned my Jackson SL3 to Eb, but to be honest I can't see how I'd change the song. Can you explain what I'm doing wrong please innerdream?
I want the song to sound kinda weird and dissonant, but I don't want it to sound...,well, wrong!

I can't help you write your song it's your song! :)

Here's a little assignment though. Figure out what key your intro is in then figure out what key your second section is in, you can find all the info you need on the web. Then look up changing keys and how to do it affectively. Even if you don't apply it to this piece it will make you a better writer. There are no rules so if you want that abrupt key change and you like it then there you go.

Re: Very short acoustic piece

I know the first section is just a Dm chord, whereas the second section is based on a Gm chord. So is the third section.
I dunno, when I listen to it, I don't hear anything jarring so I'm stumped! :(

Well that should work if all the guitars are tuned to a half step down.

Re: Very short acoustic piece

Reminds me Iron Maiden powerslave-- The rime of the antient mariner!

The change could be smoother that's true, but I dig it.
I still think that you use too much distortion on your tone.Too dirty for the style you play, or things you do.

But I like the ideas and the concept!

Re: Very short acoustic piece

Thanks very much daemon, I appreciate it! I like the ideas and concept too, I just wish I could get it all into one really cool package! :)

Re: Very short acoustic piece

Ok, I've redid it, so the key doesn't change after the intro. It SHOULD sound a lot smoother now.
My only issue is how loose the electric rythm guitars sound. That guitar (with a JB) sounds awesome in standard tuning, but it sounds really flubby in Eb. I'll have to put my Jackson Concept back to Eb, the Bill Lawrence USA 500XL handles lower tunings much better.

But never mind that, what do you guys think of the ideas in the track? I'm really not sure where to go with it, but I kinda like it for some reason.

Re: Very short acoustic piece

Anyone listened to the new version? I finally used the capo I've had for over ten years - first time ever!

Re: Very short acoustic piece

Better for sure, it sounds like one song now instead of three stuck together. I'm reminded of King Crimson a bit, not a bad thing at all.
