VHT Special 6 Ultra

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

Links to sound clips? I'm in the market for a small portable amp.

The story line is interesting for sure but if it's not a boutique builder it's not as interesting.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

Will it do old school style metal or are you better off going with a Blackstar HT-1/HT-5?

I cant say ive heard a demo of the special 6 ultra that I particularly liked. Would be nice if I could see one in person.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

You just might have missed the point, which is that...

If they both work, and that's your only consideration, then then build vs build point is moot.

If they both FAIL, then you and your amp tech are faced with two choices

1. Replace the entire board, which takes 2 weeks. You play the gig with a scrounged amp.

or

2. Replace that little part located right there, in an easily accessible place, with another part of the same value which the tech has in one of the little drawers in his parts bin. This takes ten minutes and you play the gig with your amp instead of some crap amp you scrounged in a big hurry, which makes you play a better gig.

Right, but what I am saying is this:

Exhibit A (A Bugera Amp):

Exhibit B (A Fryette Amp):

Where is the difference between these two if either of them fail??? Everything is on separate PCBs on both of these amps, tubes, caps, pots, everything! I think you're the one who is missing the point old chum!

Furthermore, here is a message from Steve Fryette himself about "point-to-point" construction and "build quality"...printed on one of his very own PCB's:

I'm not looking to start a pissing match here, and I mean no disrespect, I'm just calling them like I see them. I could do this kind of comparison with many different "budget" amps and so-called "boutique" amps.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

Here is what I'm talking about...see the difference between these and the two amps you posted? Clean hand wiring like this is what make an amp super easy to work on if it craps out on a gig.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

I've got one of the VHT Special 6's (not ultra) and I don't know what Jones is talking about, that little amp sounds great for what it is. A low wattage, 10" speaker combo that works great for bedroom playing. I still gig with my Super Reverb, but that's a matter of volume and not tone. I've used the Special 6 on a jazz gig and it just slayed. Tone, Volume, pull boost. It was all I needed. I would like to snag a nice reverb pedal for it though...gotta have my reverb :)

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

I didnt read thru the thread, but wanted to give my opinion on the amp. I spent some time playing thru the head and combo with a variety of guitars. It reminds me most of the Blackheart Little Giant. I actually prefer the eq section of the LG. I was not impressed with the VHT. Dry, one-dimensional little amp with not very musical breakup, IMO.

I much prefer the Marshall Class 5 for a single ended, low watter.

See, I just don't get along with EL84's. I much prefer the 6v6. I think it comes down to (especially in these little single ended amps more so than any other) having the right tubes in there and a properly broken in speaker. Once I broke the speaker in on my Special 6 the breakup was wonderful. I still wanna try a lower wattage speaker that will break up a little sooner though.

To be fair, the amp was brand new and the speaker had no time on it. I agree, even the Class 5 sounded a bit dull and tubby until the speaker started breaking in. It sounded tons different into a 2x12 with V30s. The VHT could very possibly be the same way.

I'd love to hear one of the S6 heads through my 2x12 Cannabis Rex loaded cab.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

Old thread bump, I'm wondering about this amp. I'm kinda looking for a low wattage tube HEAD for a practice amp. 2 bills and a clean/boost channel is about right. Any more input on these? I don't like el84 amps, I wonder if there's something else that I'm missing, like the TS amp maybe?

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

MF has a 45 dollar off coupon which would put this in at about 285 bucks.

Not bad if it sounds even decent.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

I've had mine for a while now and I *still* love that thing. Let a guy play harp through it the other night and it sounded excellent. I don't think you can go wrong with this amp at this price point to be honest.

It has been my favorite small combo/low wattage amp I've tried so far.

some dude near me was takeing these little amps and tricking them out and makeing them really cool. you cant resale them for big money but I played one of his tricked out modified ones and I thought it was good. Again you cant trickem out and ask big money but stricktly just to play? portable and fun. He was an amp tech and it was a hobby for him

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

I'm really wanting to get a second one of these and try a stereo rig with my delay. I think it'd be a killer sound and I get to crank it to get that great pushed tube tone. The speakers do have to be broken in a bit and even then the cab design doesn't lead itself to a lot of bass, but I really like the mids and that's the important part to me!
