VHT Special 6 Ultra

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

The speakers do have to be broken in a bit and even then the cab design doesn't lead itself to a lot of bass, but I really like the mids and that's the important part to me!

I would be using it with a Boogie 1x12 with an EV, hence I only need the head version.

Any comparison to the TS amp? Are there any other 6V6 low wattage amps I'm missing?

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

I have yet to try the TS amp, but something about the PTP nature of the VHT and it's simplicity for modding definitely makes me lean that direction. Maybe I'm over-generalizing but I'm going to go with VHT (while yes, I know VHT isn't the same VHT it was a few years ago) over Ibanez when it comes to something like a valve based guitar amplifier.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

My point? All of this hubub about amp construction is bull****. Mesa and Bogner, all of the big names, don't make them any better than the Blackheart Head that I paid $450 for.

And yet... the Blackheart isn't on anyone's "holy grail list" of greatest tones/amps ever. I guess that most people are just ignorant and like to piss lots of money away for nothing more than a name -- never using their ears...

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

I have to say, that VHT looks like quality built little amp. I"m pretty impressed with that aspect.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

IT's a very well put together amp. Feels very solid. Pots don't feel cheap, got a good heft to the wood used in cabinet construction. Even the cosmetics (tolex, grill cloth) are better quality than I've seen in an amp in the same price range.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

Ok, hold on, in the demo I watched, they had the prototype, and said they were running an EL34 in it? I understand you can run different tubes in it, but an EL34 in an amp that is shipped with a 6V6? Am I missing something here? If that is so, I may looking into this.

Here is a link, with an interview with the designer. This is the old model, but I'm sure some info with relate.

You're not missing anything. It can run any octal tube and with the use of a converter (yellow jacket, or one of the new VHT ones) you can even run EL84's in it.

I understood that you didn't need a converter? It sounded like you could stick an EL34 right in?

You can with an EL34, but an EL84 is made differently. It's not an octal pin set so you have to have a converter to convert the pin set of the EL84 to octal. I'll give a picture explanation.

So in order to make the pins on an EL84 fit, you have to convert it to the same pin set that the EL34/6v6/6L6 use.

Re: VHT Special 6 Ultra

Yes, the Special 6 (and I assume the Special 6 Ultra) will take KT88's. I have the combo though and I'd have to see if the flared out bottle of the KT88 will fit inside the cabinet.

you know, that might be the coolest of all if it voices right with the amp. now I am curious
