Vibe pedals?

Re: Vibe pedals?

Everybody here is suggesting their favorite vibe pedal but no one has mentioned the headroom/distortion issue...

If the Fulltone Deja is crunching up I'll be honest I think that most of the vibes on the market will crunch up with the pickups you are using.

They all seem to me to have about the same headroom.

I have to ask, what pickups are you using?

Re: Vibe pedals?

Could be signal chain placement too - Vibes like to be at or near the front closest to the guitar. If you're hitting it with a ton of fuzz or boost or have a buffer in front of it then that's likely your problem.

Re: Vibe pedals?

The Oxvibe is apparantly tuned so it can handle fuzz before it. That's the reason I went that route. I use buckers, and a fuzz and like the idea.

They are 70s Gibson tarbacks. I do have them mounted high and I tend to play like an ape.

I have the problem even when I go guitar->mdv ii->amp.

One thing I'm wondering is if the voltage conversion circuit in the pedal (which is supposed to convert 9v to 18v internally) is not working right.

I don't know enough about electronics to test this theory myself.

If the 9 to 18 volt part wasn't working the pedal wouldn't work...

I have a STRONG feeling that with your pickups and playing you'll crunch up any vibe pedals out there...

credit must be given where due. This is a very very good point....

I have no headroom issues at all with the NEO Ventilator and I run a variety of pickups from SD Jazz to Dimebuckers. The nice thing about the NEO Ventilator is there is a drive function that emulates the old Leslie tube amps that gives the effect that the unit is being pushed. I can get a cool Knopfler tone out or it with the drive and the rotary set slow. Black Hole Sun also sounds amazing through it. Like I said it is an amazing unit, pricey but amazing.

And again, while a cool effect it's not a Uni-Vibe like the OP is wanting.

Re: Vibe pedals?

Univibes do inmdeed run a range from the phase 45 like to official univibe to all points in between....

Re: Vibe pedals?

Never played one, but I have liked all the clips I ever heard from the Sweet Sound Ultra Vibe.

Since most of the better sounding vibe pedals are pretty expensive I have stuck to trying phasers...Ross Phaser (Taiwan), MXR Phase 45 reissue and Hadwired Phase 90, and DOD 201, 401, 490...and flangers...Ross (USA), DOD FX75B, Arion SFL-1, Ibanez FL9. My favorite phaser is the DOD 201 (subtle, natural, nice speed range, like the shape of the wobble). Favorite flanger is the DOD FX75B especially after adjusting the internal trip pots (light chorus to drippy wet pseudo vibrato).

Lots of people malign DOD pedals, but I have found many that I really like...FX90 delay, DFX9 delay, DFX91 delay, FX65 stereo chorus, DOD/Digitech PDS 20/20 Multiplay.

Re: Vibe pedals?

I was playing with the Vibe setting on my Eventide H9 today. Very cool and very flexable. The H9 lets you control almost any parameter of the effect.

Phasers are tricky. I bought an EHX stereo polyphase and it does some cool stuff (the envelope filter is great for example) but it's on ebay right now, mainly because phase is just too strong of an effect for me. I never seem to be able to dial in a tone I dig, especially with distortion, and I guess that's why I like vibe because it's, more subtle, loose and distortion friendly.

In the end I decided to pass on the Wilson Haze, because it was too phaser-like based on the clips I saw - although if that's what you are looking for (more gilmour and less trower) it is a great value and seems like an awesome and ergonomic design. The Aquavibe seemed more ethereal and chorus-like, and I almost went for it... it seems perfect for clean tones. But in the end I picked the DryBell, because it just sounded perfect to me. This may be the hardest decision I have ever made on a pedal, especially since all I have to go on is clips and reviews by other players. I'd also add, all three of the guys who make these pedals answered my questions quickly, gave me great insight and were really cool - which makes it even harder. In a perfect world I would have bought all 3.

When the DryBell lands I'll bump this thread again and give my 2 cents.

Thanks to all y'all for your input and suggestions, much appreciated!

Re: Vibe pedals?

Bumping this thread since I got the DryBell and have had a chance to put it on my pedalboard --

First impression, very lush, full, lots of throb, seems less trebly than the MDV-2. NO distortion - the pedal is very clean. This has solved my problem with the MDV-2 crackling when I played harder.

Pretty stoked, this pedal is extremely well made and their support has been awesome. It's the size of an MXR stompbox and takes a standard 9v without problems.

I have not really messed with all the settings yet but I am very pleased so far. :headbang:
