Vibramate

Heyo!
Anyone got any experience with Vibramate mounting systems for Bigsby? Are they any good?
Thinking about mounting a Bigsby on my SG Special, but don't want to drill up my baby.

Re: Vibramate

Pay very close attention to the neck pitch angle on your SG. This will determine what vibrato bridges would fit on your specific instrument without leaving the bridge saddles ridiculously high off the body.

Re: Vibramate

As an other option to look into there is also the Stets Bar.

I have not used the vibramate + bigsby nor the stets bar so I offer no opinions on how effective either are.

With that being said I want this guitar...

Re: Vibramate

Highly recommend the Vibramate for putting a Bigsby on an SG. Works like a charm.

Plus, it looks so good that Portuguese guitar blogs will steal your pictures:

Re: Vibramate

Sweet zombie Jesus, that's one redicilously good looking SG!
Half the reason I want a Bigsby is for the looks. Got a white SG Special 60s Tribute, and in my mind it looks super sweet with a Bigsby. :P
The other half is to get those sweet Gilmour-y dips.
What about the Vibramate string holder then, for top-mounting the strings instead of twisting them around the bar?
Also, I'm thinking a roller bridge should help a bit with keeping it in tune. Correct?

I had a tele with a bigsby and I found that a properly cut nut, locking tuners, and heavier strings (11s) did wonders for the tuning stability with my playing style. I had no problems with using the traditional Bigsby string mounts or the normal tune-o-matic bridge.

My suggestions is to add one piece at a time. Then after you decide if each component is working or not then add the next one. No sense in spending extra money on the "what-ifs" until you know what is or is not working for you.

I had the same problem and bought the Vibramate and it's wonderful. But on an SG you have to be careful that you get the right one. The normal version won't fit an SG with the big batwing pickguard. The one I have (because I do have the big pickguard) is the "Short tail" version which is made just for these SG, although your Special won't have it.

I have the "Spoiler" which is the thing where the strings are actually attached to. I don't know if it's the Spoiler or the Vibramate itself but now the Bigsby doesn't change the pitch as much as without, because the bigsby is a little higher and the angle of the strings on the bridge is smaller.

Re: Vibramate

Yeah, I got the small pickguard on mine, so the standard Vibramate should do the trick.
I'm not looking to do any dive bombs. More half/whole step dips and vibrato, so it should be plenty for me.
I'll start out with the Vibramate and the Bigsby and see if that's enough, without the "spoiler".
Thanks for all the help guys!

Thank you!

That's an older pic of my guitar. Since then I have stained my fence and installed a roller bridge on the SG. I think it does help keep it more stable.

Between a good nut filing and the roller bridge, the SG stays in tune about as well as a guitar with a Floyd. No lie.

Re: Vibramate

That sounds great! What roller bridge would you recommend?
My SG keeps in tune incredibly well too. I can bend like a mad man all night and it still stays in tune.

Re: Vibramate

Yes they are. I love mine, and it's as good as drilling into the guitar, plus you can cover up the holes that were used for the stopbar.

Re: Vibramate

Gratuitous double post (just posted this in the SG thread). It works great. And, I have moved in on and off at least twice...no problems at all.

I just put on one of these:

...because I didn't want it to look too weird.

There might be fancier roller bridges out there, but these ones that they sell on Ebay are a perfect replacement for the ABR-1 that was stock on my SG Classic and they keep the stock look pretty well.

I've never had any issues with it.

Re: Vibramate

Some say that the roller bridges suck sustain a bit. I don't know myself cause I've never used one but I friend of mine who's an experienced Bigsby-user says that the best solution is to use the string saver saddles on your normal TOM bridge. I have those as well in my SG and neither of us have had any problems. Also you might wanna consider the TusQ nut which is basically made out of the same material as the string savers. It will also help with tuning.
