What can you guys tellme about the various versions of the Vibrolux, including the old black and silverface versions and the current ones?

Re: Vibrolux questions

they have a rep for being bright, jangly, and crunching up nicely

the brown ones are my favorite, you can put any guitar through them & they still sound amazing

Re: Vibrolux questions

I've got a silverface Vibrolux Reverb. Great vintage Fender at lower volumes, turn it up and it gets that unique 6L6 Fender smooth breakup. The blackface ones breakup early, the silverface only give up the goods on "4" and above on the volume (which is a good or a bad thing depending on your intention for the amp).

Re: Vibrolux questions

I have a 60's blackface Vibrolux Reverb with Jensen C10N speakers. That's the ultimate Vibrolux, IMO, and it's a great amp for Telecasters and Strats. That's the model you hear on Roy Buchanan and Danny Gatton records.

The silverface model is similar but the speakers aren't as good, the cab is not as well made and the amp needs to be "blackfaced" in order to be able to adjust the bias properly.

The reissues are OK but they use cheap Illinois caps and are not handwired...they're on a printed circuit board.

They sound very good but not as magically good as the original 60's blackface version.

Re: Vibrolux questions

The BF and SF amps are pretty similar...a SF Lux can ba made lots better by tweaking the circut to BF Specs but all in all they are good amps. The new Lux (Custom Vibrolux Reverb) is a completely different amp. The CVR is a slightly hot rodded 63 Vibroverb reissue...not the 64 Vibroverb (with 1x15) but the 63 which is a brown tolex amp...the reissue Vibroverb was a reissue of the 63 2x10 Vibroverb with the biggest difference between an originl and a reissue being the PCB, the hardwired reverb cables and the SS Rec in the reissue...the CVR is based on the reissue 63 Vibroverb and actually uses the same PCB, chassis and cab the differences incluse the reverb and tremolo on both channels, a much more shallow sounding reverb and the complete removeable of the negative feedback loop...the removing of the nevative feedback loop makes the amp much more raw and midrangey...the CVR sounds a lot like a Brown Tolex Fender amp but with a dash of tweed thrown in. It is a great amp and if you like to crank an amp for crunch then control everything from your guitar it's a killer piece. They need new tubes and better speakers IMO but with those changes can be great...however, they sound very little like a "classic" Bf or SF Vibrolux.
