*Video Clip* '86 Laney Pro-Tube

TwilightOdyssey

Darkness on the edge of Tone
This is a very simple video clip I made for Davey to demonstrate the sound of my 1986 Pro-Tube 30 (single channel, 3x 12AX7, 2x 6V6), with and without the pull boosts on the EQ. There are a few Pro-Tube amps floating out there, and I think that they are a great bargain - without the boost, they sound a bit like a modded Marshall; with the EQs boosted, it has a very modern/Soldano sound. For the money, a Pro-Tube + a 4x12 cabinet is a great way to step into an all-tube, UK-made rock head that sounds great for hard rock and metal.

I had all of the EQ controls dimed for this clip, preamp gain dimed, hi sensitivity input, and master volume about 7.5 - 8.

Sorry about the sun glare on the video; it was very bright out today!

Note that this clip is just guitar + amp + Hot Plate attenuation, nothing else. Please excuse the lame playing, too. :D

If you look carefully, you can see my Kamikaze on the table behind me, which was getting a string change ...

Sounds great to me Twilight, but then I am a sucker for a Laney.

It has the right amount of gain, and doesn't need distortion to cover it up.

:werd:

EDIT: I'll bump it again in a bit for Davey, as long as he doesn't tell me to walk on by. j/k

Yep that def sounds like a Laney! My VC isnt that far from that sound really.

Re: *Video Clip* '86 Laney Pro-Tube

Thanx, gents.

Only 2 replies ... my playing must've been off more than I thought! ;)

Re: *Video Clip* '86 Laney Pro-Tube

Playing was just fine Ben :)

I had me one of those 30 watt Laney combos w/ the closed back. was a decent sounding amp, but 6v6's just didn't do it for me...it got buzzy/grainy when cranked...not as smooth as EL84/34s.

But you are right, compared to alot of modern "crap" low to mid priced tube amps they offer today (with a few exceptions), it's a great deal if ya can find one..get some good tubes in it, and it will make some good sounds.

Re: *Video Clip* '86 Laney Pro-Tube

Is it legal to play outside with that guitar? i'm sure you could take down a few planes.

Awsome amp btw

Re: *Video Clip* '86 Laney Pro-Tube

That was a good clip dude, i'm still doing my best to raise the funds for Brows pro tube head. Although i'll be pounding it with a big muff set to max sustain and volume and zero on the tone knob.

Thanx, Kyuss and wixedmords. :)

Funky P, I have a special lisence from the FAA that allows me to use the guitar within 30,000 feet of a moving aircraft.

Re: *Video Clip* '86 Laney Pro-Tube

Hey where can i learn to play like that!! :P Bah, one day i'll get there. Awesome amp, i love my Laney.

Re: *Video Clip* '86 Laney Pro-Tube

Sounded great. Now why can't I get my Laney AOR50 to sound like that? Did you use a quad box or just the speaker in the combo?

Thanx, Hames. :)
The PT30 is a sinlge channel amp head, not a combo. The video clip is the head going into a Rivera 4x12 cabinet. One of the things you have to do to get great sound from any valve head is C R A N K it! Since that's not possible in my NYC apartment, I use a THD Hot Plate attenuator. I basically run the head flat out, and then use the Hot Plate to bring the volume under control.

Of course, guitar and pickup have a big part of the tone, too!

Well played man! :bigok:

For me the sound was too british but that´s only my point of view :)

Re: *Video Clip* '86 Laney Pro-Tube

Nice clip! I have messed with my 50 quite a bit and now have the low gain channel sounding extremely plexi like. Really like it and I fully agree that you won't get to the goodness of those amps w/o cranking them 1st. Attenuation is a must if you really want to hear what they can do. It was a hell of a 200.00 score for me.
