Video clip: new music project, live play through

Darkness on the edge of Tone
Live play through for upcoming gigs of my new music project, Nautilus. It's just myself and a singer. Anything not played live is a Beatstep Pro into a Roland JV1080.

Difficult to comment on the backing without the melody or lyrics to put it in a proper context.

So how was beatstep pro for programming the drum track? The 1080 sounds good. Guitar sound great too.

Thanks! I really wish I could use more synths, but I am keeping it as simple as possible for gigs. I will probably pick up a backup 1080 or a 2080 and use the same settings just in case something goes wrong; they are light and affordable so it should be easy to do. (Can you believe the 1080 was around $2k when it was intoduced?! I got mine, which is in mint condition, for $100!!)

Programming w the Beatstep Pro is a cinch! The only downside is that if you want small variations you have to go through MANY patterns for a single song. It can get a little labourious ... but then, welcome to sequencing lol. The fact that it puts out 3 separate MIDI streams is what makes it possible, besides sequence chaining. I am pretty certain that most Beatstep owners are not using it the that way I am.

Once all the songs are sequenced I am going to look into whether it's possible to slave my Beatstep to this beast. :)

Re: Video clip: new music project, live play through

I'm definitely picking up a beatstep pro. My mv8800 is a beast fit for keeping stationary, but beatstep pro small and fairly light in comparison and rock solid compared to using a laptop running software. I have a jv1010 I got for pennies it seems and a couple expansion cards for it. Session expansion in right now. Only takes one at a time. Trying to put a portable rig together will be interesting but just met another guitarist/synth enthusiast and want to do some collaboration soon. He has a full studio so I need to slim down a rig to take with me. I think the beatstep pro will come in handy. Not even sure I'll have guitar on any tracks with whatever we try though. I am as big a synth enthusiast as guitar enthusiast. Happy doing stuff with either.

Re: Video clip: new music project, live play through

My general approach is to play whatever needs to be played to get the job done. :)

This rig is quite portable: guitar, head, pedal board, and cab for guitar parts; 4U rack with JV1080/power amp, Beatstep, and second cab for synth parts; 6 channel mini mixer to submix the outputs from the Roland.

I am far less concerned about the best/perfect sounds when gigging. As long as it is at least this side of acceptable and the performance is there, I really don't care what is generating the sound!:)

Stepping up to a JV-2080 would be a good move. Twice as many expansion slots, more built-in effects and a big editing screen. The XV-5080 is even more capable. It will even load and replay S-760 or S-1000 samples via smart card.

Thanks ... I will not do anything until I see how this moves forward, first. I am not going to get another synth module just to have it.

That has a nice clean, crisp, and articulate tone to it. I love the way you have the flanger dialed in. Everything sounds great!!

Thanks! A friend of mine once said my guitar playing has good 'diction'. I think he pretty much nailed it with that assessment. :)
When you roll the mxr flanger all the way back, instead of adding brightness, it really darkens your tone -- which is great when you have the gain dialed up, because things can get a bit spiky ... my main plan for using the flange was to dial that spikiness back down and and give the sound some thickness.

Re: Video clip: new music project, live play through

I tell ya what...that's a pretty catchy little melodic riff. I've been humming it in my head pretty much since I was last in this thread.

Re: Video clip: new music project, live play through

I think your new project is gonna rule! You clearly have a lot of stage presence and technical proficiency live!

Re: Video clip: new music project, live play through

Thanks! There are a few people I keep in the back of my mind before I post any kind of tone clip and you are one of them. :)
