Vintage 30 in an open back combo amp?

What could I expect from vintage 30's in an open back Fender combo amp? Specifically a 80's Fender Concert? I'm looking for more low end/tighter low end. I'm also looking to tame the highend a bit, an I remember hearing V30's are super bright.

You'd do better with a G12H30. Fuller tone than the Vintage 30 and more bass.

Don't know what you have in there now, but if it's a generic 12 the V-30 would probably be a big improvement.

Still: my favorite 12 in a single 12 Fender combo amp is the G12H30...with the V30 being the runner up.

Less bass and mids (V30) gives a speaker more treble compared to a speaker with more bass and mids (G12H30).

If you have a 80's Concert II ? It's rated at 60 watts,So be careful Before you put a G12H30 in there which I believe is only rated for 30 watts? If low end/tighter low end is desired? My guess is you will not be happy with a V-30.
Some of them 80's Concert II came with EV's stock. I would recommend something from the Eminence Patriot line . The Texas Heat can handle more wattage then you have on tap, And has nice lows and should be able to tame a bright amp.:D

Thanks, for the info Lew. It'de be replaceing a fender labled ceramic 12, in an 80's Concert (which is already kinda bright and mid heavy). From what little i've read about the G12H30 it actually does sound more like what I'm looking for, but its also only 30watts. The Concert is 60watts, so that wouldn't work out to well, haha.

Yeah, the upgraded ones did come with EV's stock. Mines just got one of the generic Fender labled speakers though. I actually want to get an EVM12L to put in it, but they're a little hard to come by used. From what little I've heard about the two reissues (black lable, and "classic"), neither is really the same as the originals.

I think the Vintage 30 will sound great in that amp, and definitely less bright than the licensed Fender speaker in there now. You'll definitely notice a bigger, tighter, ballsier sound.

Some people knock the Vintage 30, but it's the best speaker ever made for rock, IMO. And most amp companies agree.

I had a 1-12 Fender SS amp very similar to the one you have...even though yours is tube. I put a Vintage 30 in it, and it was like night and day. It proved that those speakers they put in their amps are gutless garbage.

I think the V30 is tighter than the H30, but the H30 is a little warmer. Both would be a great choice for that amp.

Man Conflicting opinons are confuseing! haha. Esspecially when its something I don't know much about.

But yeah, I'm sure your right. Basically anything would sound better than the fender labled speaker that I got in there right now. I mean the amp still sounds great as is, but I know that speaker is crap. If it sounds as good as it does with that **** speaker, I can't imagine how great it'de be with a good speaker.

I've found Vin 30s to sound excellent w/Fender amps. Having said that, the Eminence Patriot/Redcoat line is something to check out. I've used the Pvt Jacks, for instance, and I've heard great things re the Texas Heats mentioned by kmcguitars. :unitedsta

I also like Vintage 30's a lot! I forgot that the G12H30 was rated at 30 watts...although I'm pretty sure they'll handle more than that. I've never blown one. I do like the fuller tone of the G12H30 just a little better, but the Vintage 30 is right up there and I agree that it's right up there with the best speakers ever made...and I wouldn't limit it to rock. I've played jazz, blues, gospel, etc. through Vintage 30's...it's a great speaker period.

The Eminence Wizard is supposed to be G12H30-ish, but handles 75 watts.

I have a Mesa DC-3 with the Vintage 30, and I like it a lot.

MY choice in your Concert would be the EVM--I also have Mark III and Mark IV Mesa 112 combos with the EVM. It's my favorite speaker, but I tend to play loud and clean.

You might also run across a Mesa Black Shadow/Celestion C90. Mesa often uses these in their open-back cabs. I also think this would be a good choice for your Concert.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually do wanna put a EVM12L in it, but they're not very easy to find (at least in good shape).

I have run several amps through my Mesa 3/4 back C90 cabs and they always sound great. Plenty of bottom end and they tame bright amps nicely.

A friend of mine has an old 12L copy made by Eminence. I think Eminence labeled it as a 12DL.

I'll ask him.

BTW, I run an old 12L inside a Marshall JCM C212 cab along with a V30 and I couldn't be happier.

GAH!!! yeah I know! your right. haha.

I've actually been bidding on em on ebay basically since you pointed out to me that they're normally around $100, way back in that first thread I made about em. I just keep loseing every single auction, haha.
