Vintage 30 versus Creambacks?

Re: Vintage 30 versus Creambacks?

I have Vintage 30's and Creamback H-75's in an X-pattern in my 4x12, and I've swapped the V30 in my 1x12 with a CBH too.

V30's have more biting strident high-mids while CBH's have more going on higher up the spectrum which translates into an emphasized pick attack and top-end sizzle. Vintage 30's have more (and slightly looser) lows. CBH's are tighter with less lows. The CBH's mids are creamy rather than gritty like the V30's.

IMO, my experience agrees with this comparison:

Also, I don't see it mentioned often, but in my experience, CBH's are slightly more efficient than V30's.

^^
How's that cab sound? Seems like a good mix of speakers.

Honestly, I feel the Creambacks dominate that mix (and in that cab, I prefer the tone of the V30's). Not to say it doesn't sound good, but I've still got a couple of Relic 30's on their way to see if I can get that cab a little bit less sizzly/strident by mixing those with the standard Chinese V30's.

In the 1x12, I prefer the CB, though.

Ah, that helps. I like sizzly and strident.

I like sizzly and strident too. That's why I like Chinese V30's. The cab does sound nice, it's just that I dig V30's better in that cab, and the CB's drown them out a bit too much for me.

Re: Vintage 30 versus Creambacks?

I don't have a regular V30 model but instead the Mesa V30 model and have it paired with a Creamback H75 in my Randall 2x12 cabinet. The two match really well together. The H75 is a much better speaker by itself IMO so if your goal is a 1x12 then you should go that direction. Really, though, the sounds are a bit different and they fill different needs. The H75 is like a less crunchy, tighter and more refined version of the G12M Greenbacks I had previously. I also have a Redback G12H150 and it's a lot more similar sounding to the Mesa V30, it has the same sort of like sizzly high end and is a bit more scooped. I'm not really convinced on those to be honest. Whenever I run the Mesa V30 solo it almost sounds scooped compared to the H75, maybe it is just a trick of the intense upper mids but I am not sure but it seems to be missing something that I like.

I hear Creambacks as more extended bass and smoother treble than Greenbacks. Also, the Creamback 65 (M) vs 75 (H) has the same comparison as the Greenback M vs H, H gives more bass and treble than the M, which also makes it seem a little more scoped. Also the M is 97db and the H is 100db, so it seems louder.

I hear the V30 as the JB of the speaker world. Cuts but can be strident.

I just got a 2x12 cab loaded with G12M-65 Creambacks, it’s awesome. Great balance that works well for clean and gain.
