Vintage 30's and how to know where they're made

I've been told that Celestion has been making at least, some of their speakers in China. I recently bought 4 Vintage 30's from Carvin that say they're made in England but I was told that the Chinese made speakers also say, Made in England. Is there any truth to this and if so, how can one distinguish a Chinese made Celestion from a British made Celestion?

Re: Vintage 30's and how to know where they're made

Not sure how, but I honestly don't hear any difference other than normal speaker variance between the two.

IIRC, Celestion actually shipped all of their machinery over to the new factory in China, and got new stuff for the England factory. If anything, the Chinese would be the ones closest to the older, English made ones, if that's true.

"If the label says "IPSWICH ENGLAND" it's UK. If instead it simply has the number "50" it's China."

Thats what I found online, the label is on magnet of the speaker.

Re: Vintage 30's and how to know where they're made

is it possible that the chinese ones are simply put together in china but made from english cones etc? just like many things thee days.

Re: Vintage 30's and how to know where they're made

All of the above.

And if they're in or from a Mesa cabinet they're still made in England. I guess Mesa didn't like the Chinese V30s and pretty much forced them to keep making them in England.

From what I understand, the biggest difference between the two is the glues used and thus the gluing process.

Re: Vintage 30's and how to know where they're made

I've thought about that before, but the only way to really know would be to put 2 side by side and do a listening test.

If you think about it, no matter where it's made, it's some metal, a cone, a magnet, and a voicecoil. As long as it's the same materials, it's just soldering and glueing them all together.

Re: Vintage 30's and how to know where they're made

ALL NON Heritage, ceramic magnet Celstion speakers are made in China now...no matter what you read or hear.

The Heritage series (this covers the heritage G12M20, G12H30 and G12-65) as well as the alnico speakers (both the blue and the gold) are still made in England but everything else is made in China.

The Chinese Vintage 30's will give you lead poisioning as well as knock you out and cause you to get date raped after playing through them.

Could also be because Mesa has custom V30's made... voiced a tiny bit brighter, and have a 10w higher rating.

I believe this to be true as well.......

Re: Vintage 30's and how to know where they're made

That's good enough for me.

BTW, I bought a Marshall 1960BV 4x12 about a year ago
to go with my old faithful 1960BV I bought back in '95. The new cab didn't sound like my old one at all! It sounded like poo and this is why I bought four V30's from Carvin, to replace the Celestion/Marshall "Vintage" speakers in the new cab. I opened both cabs and they both have the same speakers in it. But I tell you, they don't sound anything like the old ones. I also noticed my new cab is rated at 280w and my old one at 300w. I remember all the 1960 vintage cabs rated were rated at 300w but Marshall acted like I was crazy. Anyone here know what the deal was with that?

A 300W Marshall cabinet has G12T-75's in it, not V30's. Different speakers that should sound completely different. V30 cabinets should be between 240-280W.
