vintage dimarzio humbucker identification

I got this humbucker for really cheap off ebay from a music store that went out of business. The pup seems to be an old style dimarzio with hex pole pieces and 4 conductor cables, there was literally nothing written on the box or any marking on the pup that I'm aware of that indicates which model it is. After some looking around on the internet I think it resembles a dimarzio dual sound. What do you guys think? I'll probably have to wait for my new tele to arrive so I can put it in and see how it sounds.

Could also be a paf pro. I couldn't tell you from the description. Have you measured resistance, that would help as the dual sound was higher output than the PAF pro. I believe both were four conductor, though, and both had hex pole pieces.

Re: vintage dimarzio humbucker identification

I didn't know DiMarzio encased their pickups in plastic like that. Interesting.

Re: vintage dimarzio humbucker identification

the resistance would be at about 8k ohms if I did measure it correctly. you put the green and bare cables together and the black and white cables together on dimarzio 4 conductor pups for measurement right guys?

Re: vintage dimarzio humbucker identification

Triangle feet came sometime in 1981 so it's not older than '81.

I seem to remember that DiMarzio encased their Super 2s in plastic like that and stopped sometime in the mid '80s.

What does it meter at?

Re: vintage dimarzio humbucker identification

you dont need the bare when checking resistance. connect the black and white to link the coils, and check the red and green and see what you get.

if its around 8.5k it could be a paf pro or a super2

I measured it again. Getting really curious so I might just pop it in my strat to see how it sounds.

Is it me or do you have the red & green twisted together on the red probe and the black and white twisted together on the black probe?

Leave the black and white twisted together but don't touch a probe to it. Touch the red probe to the red wire and the black probe to the green wire.

thanks man, I measured it again according to your instructions and the meter now reads about 8.5k. I guess it should be a super 2 since I read somewhere that these plastic encased dimarzios are pre-1981

I think the super distortion came like that. Did someone already say that? ha!

That pickup is post 1981 but the plastic cases weren't used past the mid 80's. I've never seen a square foot DiMarzio Super with the plastic case so I am just assuming that the plastic cases came after 1981 (when they changed from square to triangle feet).

I used to collect DiMarzio pickups before I went Duncan. I sold most of them but still have a couple of super rare ones.
