My son has a very nice 1978 Ibanez Musician MC300. It is a thru neck, solid body, 24 fret, with 2 super 88 humbuckers. It has tri mode switches for single, humbucker, and phase. The pickups seem to be microphonic when run high with distortion. Clean is fine. If you have the volume knob above 6 (on guitar) without playing the amp emits a high squeal (not regular feedback). He has a Peavey 5150 head with a 2/12 cab.
I took the neck p/u out to inspect. The pickups are sealed with a brown plastic cover and appear to be filled with epoxy or something similar. I can see the epoxy that oozed out of the bottom holes during manufacturing. It doesn't look like the cover will come off of the pickup without any damage. What are my options? Is there any company that can disassemble these pickups and repot them? I would like to keep the guitar stock, but if the super 88s are not serviceable, I can put in suitable replacements. Any suggestions.
Thanks,
VBC
