vintage Ibanez Super 88 microphonic?

My son has a very nice 1978 Ibanez Musician MC300. It is a thru neck, solid body, 24 fret, with 2 super 88 humbuckers. It has tri mode switches for single, humbucker, and phase. The pickups seem to be microphonic when run high with distortion. Clean is fine. If you have the volume knob above 6 (on guitar) without playing the amp emits a high squeal (not regular feedback). He has a Peavey 5150 head with a 2/12 cab.

I took the neck p/u out to inspect. The pickups are sealed with a brown plastic cover and appear to be filled with epoxy or something similar. I can see the epoxy that oozed out of the bottom holes during manufacturing. It doesn't look like the cover will come off of the pickup without any damage. What are my options? Is there any company that can disassemble these pickups and repot them? I would like to keep the guitar stock, but if the super 88s are not serviceable, I can put in suitable replacements. Any suggestions.

Thanks,
VBC

welcome to the forum!!

high pitched squealing sounds like a microphonic pup. if that truely is epoxy that is oozing out then you are probably out of luck since removing the cover will probably destroy the pup but it might be possible to dip the pup with the cover on but the plastic cover may pose a problem. id call duncan customer service and see what they say.

as far as a replacement, the sky is the limit. what styles of music is the guitar used for? what types of tones do you like?

He plays classic rock and metal. He is a very technical player and likes SRV, Rhoads, Hendrix. He plays an Ibanez RG-750 (1990) with floyd rose as main axe. He likes the different sounds available with the tri sound coil taps on the musician though, and he plays it alot. I don't think the pickups can be dipped because the plastic cover is solid.
