Vintage JBJ magnet swap A3+les paul=Wow

Ive had some issues with the stiffnes and sterile sound of my JBJ .
Did some serious tweeking with 500k pots and different A5.

Even in my 68-69 spec Plexi its to stiff.
And it got the lower filtering and is way more flubby then 74 and 77 spec superlead.
Not to mention 2203.

A3 gave me controlled but lose low end.
Nice sparkle to mids and high end.

Lose but not muddy.
Bright but silky.

Yep, stock JB and LP problems do abound.

Glad you got yours sorted with a mag swap.

Ok... so you were trying to use a knife as a screw driver... so you broke the tip off flat to get it to work...

OMG, you're going to rile up the metal boys again. They just calmed down.

Pretty funny that the time typical late 70s amps sound bad with LP JBJ.
But mid 80s metal mod like Caswell 39 sounds great with A5.

Lose high gain amps sound better then 1959 or 2203 stock circuits.

Super lead 68-69 , 74, 2203, 34mod Caswell 39 and Frank Levi 36.

All high gain amps created several years after JBJ works.
Low gain are not as good.

What happened Power-wise with the A3. Notable drop I assume…

What would your stock pickup suggestion have been? Just interested (I do see the analogy - very nice)

I have an A3 in a standard PAF neck position. I really like it and can see sort of how it might make a JB that way. Never had any JB bass issues myself. But I see how the hot/compression of the highs would not be appreciated, by someone looking for the A3 effect on that….

Which brings us back to stock pup rec?

From what he describes... a CC. He says the JB was too stiff... the jb isnt a particularly tight pickup so he wants mushy. CC is where i think i think it would land. The custom wind is inherently a touch brighter than the JB wind and more open.
