Vintage Marshall experts, teach me.

If someone offered you an original 1969 cab with the original speakers, but possibly reconed, and you could pay it off monthly for a year at a price of $2000 is it worth it? The speaker frames do date to 69, it's basketweave with a solid back, not particle board, and in overall good condition, with a couple of small holes in the grill. The speakers have no 003 or anything printed on them. I looked left right up and down, lol. He's got another that's the checkerboard (actually my fave) and he's thinking of maybe selling that. It's a 71. That one does have the original speakers and cones. He hasn't given me a price on that one and I have no idea what cabinets are worth. Can you throw me some numbers?

IDK....it wouldn't be worth it to me I guess, unless I was a collector or had a tone of money to just blow on it. especially if I didnt know what was going on with the speakers.

And I'd DEF play it first. Old greenbacks are often too loose for people, unless you play with fairly low gain (by todays standards). I like them, better than V30s for example, but it depends. I love the tone , but I think nowadays I'd gravitate to something similar in tone...but tighter in the lows. Or a mix of GBs and 75s . Or H30 and 75s. That way I get some fullness, but no bass mush.

Check on Gbase.com to see what the prices are now. Also, there's a vintage Marshall site I've run across somewhere. They might give you some help authenticating it. That's still pretty $$, though. Heads go for that and a lot more, but cabs...I'm not sure.

I thought that sounded like a lot of $$$. The payments won't hurt me at all, but like anyone else, I don't wanna get robbed. Not that he would rob me, but I think it's a case of thinking it's worth a lot more than it is. He won't budge on the price so I'll leave it be. By the way, it sounds fantastic. They both do.

I agree. If the guy won't budge on the price, just wait it out or look elswhere.
