Ok, I've got this vintage MXR 10 band eq, the blue one, and it's cool, but I never use it...a lot of because it has this ungodly hum!! It has a built in AC power chord, three pronged, and I'm assuming it's the AC. Is there anyway to convert it to take like a BOSS 9V DC adapter? easily? or is it something else?

Sounds more like either a power supply filter cap went out or you have a bad diode in the power supply? Shouldn't hum...

How might I go around diagnosing it?

Just so you know, those pedals are notorious for humming. So depending on the amount of hum, it's possible that there is nothing wrong with the pedal. Obviously if there's an unreasonably noticeable hum, there's something wrong. But if it's just something you hear in the background, it's probably a design flaw on MXR's part.

Based on the age of that pedal though, chances are it could use at least the metal can caps replaced...The electrolytics...And that's where I'd start if it were my pedal...It shouldn't have "excessive" hum...Still sounds like a problem in the power supply..

Could you get a picture of what I'd be replacing? or how to tell if they need replacing?

Check out www.tone-jam.com

Keven mods Boss GE-7s (Tone-Jam Sniper Mod $45 a shot, free return shipping) to give them a clearer sound and remove the hum you get when boosting. I've heard that he'll work on other types of EQ pedals as well, as they're basically the same thing.

Just give him an email.
