I have a chance to go check out a vintage Traynor YRM-1 Reverb Mate. Its a 4-10 combo. Ive heard they are kinda Marshally with a bit of Fender chime thrown in. Some have said Plexi like. Ive got a 2 hour round trip to go check it out and wanted to see if anyone here had opinions before hand. THANKS!

Re: Vintage Traynor ???

Find out about it's service life: e.g. has it been recapped?

A few years back I bought a 1973 Traynor YBA-1a Mark II for around $500 or so, but after recapping and service, I paid too much overall.

Re: Vintage Traynor ???

For the tone and build quality, that MK II is totally worth it, I adore mine, it is a 71. If the amp is a mid 70s, that would not be my favorite era of Traynor, great build still, but they tend to need some tweaking to
Really dial in. I would hold out for an earlier one

Re: Vintage Traynor ???

It has been recapped and freshly tubed. Its a friend of mine who owns it. Its also had all 4 of the 10's replaced with Eminence period correct replacements. Cant remember the model. I think he narrowed in down to 72-73. My tech loves the circuit. Said its all excellent shape and much like a mildly hotrodded bassman circuit. Hes the one who replaced the caps and serviced it a couple of yrs ago.

Re: Vintage Traynor ???

One thing I will say about my two Traynors, is that they take fuzz pedals, and Marshall type boost pedals extremely well!
I'm keeping my Bass Master in case i find a guru to hot rod it one day ( so I don't have to ruin an old stock Marshall ). Otherwise, even though it sounds fantastic especially with pedals, I much prefer my old '73 Marshall Superlead stock.
I think people are sometimes a little over zealous about them comparing them to an old Marshall Superlead though based on my own personal experience, but although I'm the tone King, I'm not the tone Czar, so feel free to disagree.

Ya Ive heard Plexi a lot myself. But I do have a Crunchbox as well as a Modded Crunchbox clone that should do the trick.

The Crunchbox for sure ( will make you forget you want a JCM 800) , as well as many other Marshallesque boost pedals, sounds fantastic through the old Traynors.

Regardless of the 6C, EL34 power tubes...I would think the amp is much more of a Fender sound and tone stack, than it is Marshall.
Well worth buying...nice amps to work on. Sounds like yours has been maintained and is ready to go.
good luck

Re: Vintage Traynor ???

Im hoping. My tech said its pretty much a modded Bassman circuit. Which is close to vintage marshall or is similar. Guitars and pedals are the extent of my knowledge. I know what different circuits sound like bit thats about as far as I go. Recognizing them when I see them is not gonna happen lol.

Re: Vintage Traynor ???

Got it! Didnt have to go the long drive either. Boy this thing has some serious bottom end. Nice clean sound too. Not a lot of fender tone. Def a mid peak in the Marshall tone area. Working from my cell only so no pics or vids yet.
Can anyone suggest where I can find some of the "plexish" mod schematics? Thanks.
