Virtual JCM 900 emulator (reprise thread)

OK, OK, I took some more time to figure out how to use it. I tested it in Reaper (also a free program, for multitracking). I borrowed a clean clip from the Real McTube site, and ran it through the JCM900 emulator. There were no palm mutes, so I'll have to test that on my own later with some metal riffage, but I'm starting to see how a plug-in amp could be useful, and may even replace a bad-sounding amp setup for recording. There was a lot of gain on tap, so I think for metal, I may find it useful.

I didn't go crazy with the overdrive, but tried to make it sound somewhat pleasant (note that the distorted track was turned down a bit):

I'm sorry but let me see if I got this straight, you're emulating a JCM900 on your machine? What is it, some sore of plug in?

I had a thread like this a while back, only things I found out was Native instruments ($ and the demo crashes my machine) or Guitar R.A. a Brazillian freeware program I've been using that claims to be able to use vst plug ins but only really uses the ones that come with it and only one at a time.

Ok, I've been trying to get it to work with reaper to no avail. I plugged in the guitar and it doesn't get any sound, whats up with that?

It managed to find some vst effects but none works (nou sound, no effect). Got any tips?

And how do you get this emulator to be recognised? Where do you drop it off?

here's what I did:

- first, you get the plug-in zip from the simulanalog site, save it, unzip it, and eventually, you will copy and past the jcm900.dll file into Reaper's "plugins" folder. the next time you open up reaper it should be available in the fx (VST) list. actually, you'll probably want to copy and paste the whole suite, since there's some other cool ones in the zip file.

- second, I haven't tried playing my guitar into reaper, applying the emulator and listening all at once - I think there will be too much of a lag for me to do that. I think I'd have an annoying delay sound to deal with. at least that's what usually happens when I try to listen to what's being recorded as I record it (one of my pet peeves with computer-based recording). Therefore....

- I'm going to record a straight clean guitar and save it in reaper (much like the clean clip I snagged).

-then you can hit the little "fx" button in reason to pull open the list of plug-ins. then you can select the jcm900 emulator, which will change the sound AS IT IS BEING PLAYED BACK IN REAPER, like putting a stomp box on the WAV file.

-with the suite of plug-ins you could do something like have a tube screamer in front of the jcm900, which I'm gonna play with tonight if I can. I'm sure there's a point where if you have 10 tracks all with multiple effects you'd have to have a good computer to handle all that work, but one track with a few effects should be OK.

- as far as you not being able to hear the guitar, or being able to record the guitar - that sounds like a matter of going into the options at the top and into preferences to tell Reaper what sound you're trying to record (like from a mic input, your soundcard, etc.). then you gotta make sure your audio on your computer is set such that the input is turned up and the correct input is selected (you know - in my computer, control panel, audo devices, etc.). that step might be better explained in reaper's manual on "getting started" or something.

well, you shouldn't drive yourself crazy - it's not like the bee's knees or anything. just fun to goof with.

Wait ... do you mean Reason or Reaper? They're totally different programs

Alrighty, new test! I recorded two guitars (L and R) with only a TS clone as a preamp into the laptop (into Reaper) and mixed that down with some drums done in hotstepper. I tried to keep the gain as far down as possible on the TS to see how dramatic a change it would be.

Then I applied the JCM900 emulation over them and POW - I kinda dig how it sounds! Maybe not the best thing out there, but would work in a pinch.
