Vivian Campbell

Oh, I didn't realize you were sitting in on their recording sessions.....LOL!!!
Marginally good?? Haha....ok buddy...tell me another one.
I would suggest you check out the writing credits to their songs, dude. It's not a hidden thing: Lange is credited on most of their songs as a writer.

And yes, marginally good. They have influenced no one in particular, and when they retire will be a footnote to everyone except for people that care about who sold the most records when, and aging chicks from the 80's.

No, I already know the story. Mutt did help them write all their songs, however he was treated as a 5th member of the band. Does that translate into him writing ALL the songs??? Don't think so...that reads very clear to me.

And marginally good?? Certainly not. They have one of the most memorable songs of ALL TIME...that's right ALL TIME.

You will still be hearing Pour Some Sugar On Me along with Photograph for years to come. I hardly call that marginal success.

And since when is "influencing other people" have to do with being good and successful??

What you're saying is laughable at best.

I'll tell you what happened -- in a recent (within the past 6 months) interview with Brave Words & Bloody Knuckles, Campbell said he thinks metal is stupid, particularily metal from the 80's. He hates the old Dio songs, and hates when people walk up to him and flash him the horns. He said he will never play metal again, and thinks that metal heads are immature idiots (in essence) ...

Then I guess he shouldn't have played music he didn't like or didn't believe in. Its sad when you look back at the past and hate what you did and just regret it. I feel sorry for him.

On the Phil Collen note, I always found him a very stiff and scripted guitar player. Decent phrasing, but I always found his playing...lifeless for some reason. Just my opinion.

Re: Vivian Campbell

I saw something on VH-1 in a Def Leppard interview. VC doesn't mention Dio or Whitesnake at all, there is no acknowledgement to his shredding days, and he mentioned once that he can't shred like he used to. Sure sounds like a washed up mediocre guitar player to me and a waste of a telent.

Phil Collen is a great guitar player, I saw them live. PC was always the shredder in the group, I think VC had to tone things down so as to not show up PC.

Re: Vivian Campbell

ranali; ive heard of influential guitarists, but ive never heard of Phil Collen :S

I cringe at the thought of being subjected to those "songs" for years to come. As for the other thing, I'm glad I was able to put a little humour into your day!

Well, see now we are getting somewhere. Just because you dont' like the songs doesn't mean they werent' successful or won't hold a place in the rock and roll vaults.

I think Kiss is awful.....on the other hand they are hugely successful and probably inspired 1000s of guitarists to pick up the instrument.

Umm, i dont want an argument, but TO said his personal opinion about this "guitarist"! You seemed unwilling to accept his personal opinion; in fact basically stated that the only opinion you would accept is that he was influential and amazing. I was just joining with my own opinion!

Re: Vivian Campbell

man and to think i was going to start a thread about how awesome and godlike a guitar player the mighty PHIL COLLEN is !!!!!!!!!!!!! (he's in def leppard) :laugh2:

Re: Vivian Campbell

I learn so much here every day!

Pour some sugar on me! If you want my spuz!

Trust me, I can completely accept the "opinion". He went on to say stuff that was simply not true though, that's where opinion gets misconstrued as fact.

Funny.....people ragging on Def Leppard as if they've done anything half as successful in their lives.

Re: Vivian Campbell

Actually, it's still just about opinion.
You opined that Phil Collen is a "smoking guitarist" and that Def Leppard wrote some "great songs". My opinion is that he is not a smoking guitarist, and that he hasn't written anything that can be considered great, on any scale, other than the "how greatly BAD" one.
You're insinuating that I'm stating my opinion as fact, and I can say the same, so that's gonna be a stalemate.
As for the jab about being successful, you don't know me, or who I am, so I'll just let that one slide ...

Edit: Oh yeah, I never said Lange wrote all their songs. I think you should read my posts more carefully.

No, where you lept off the deep end is where you said "when they retire will be a footnote to everyone except for people that care about who sold the most records when, and aging chicks from the 80's" and that they've influenced no one in particular?? How do you know all this??

And no I don't know you....should I?? If you're someone who is as successful as the band you're knocking down I'm sure I would have heard of you.

Dude, he let it pass, i think it wouldnt damage your "credibility" too much if you did the same!

PS - i like Twilight Odyssey more than Def Leppard. Sorry thats an opinion - shouldnt be making them on a public message board, especially in your threads!!

Re: Vivian Campbell

On a lighter note, I almost banged Steve Clarke's girlfriend. He had been dead for about 6 months when my friend's father who used to work for Epic records brought her home after a night of drinking. My friend (and drummer at the time) and I were listening to Led Zeppelin I when they came in, and she started with "Ohh, Steve loved Zeppelin so much - do you play guitar? really? you are so sensitive..." About 15 minutes later I had her up in my friends bedroom - his father was pissed, but had the last laugh. I had her on the waterbed, had let loose her giant guns, and was taking off the belt to her skirt when my friend came in and passed out on the bed. I kept telling her he would never wake up (he was an alcoholic - recovering now), and that it was a king sized bed so he wasn't even near us, but she freaked thinking it was a ploy for us to double team her. She grabbed her shirt and bailed - and none of us got laid. :smack:
