Volume pot mess

For anyone else who solders on a regular basis, have you ever come across a volume pot that you just couldn't get anything to stick to? Every now and then, i get a pot that refuses to let any solder stick to the back of it and it always ends up infuriating me. Is it me, my technique or the pot? Anyone got any tips or tricks to make it stick? any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

-wipe it down with alcohol 1st incase there is some gunk on there
-i like to criss cross score it with a box cutter
-use flux

thats about all i can think of off the top of my head. there might be a soldering tips thread in the vault.
