Volune of fender bassman

Hello,

I was looking into the fender bassman 4x10 combo amp and i love the look. However, i previously owned a 50/100w 2x12 carvun mts combo and it was really on the brink of being too loud for my house. Can someone tell me if the bassman would be signif louder or if i shouldbexpect the volune to be about the same as the mts was on 50w?

Yeah, by the time a 410 Bassman hits it's sweet spot, it's very loud, but my biggest problem with that amp is how fatiguing the mids are on my ears, no matter which speakers are in it.
I've owned around 100 amps and two Bassmans...90's RI and Ltd.

If you want something cool, get a 68 RI Deluxe Reverb and a Way Huge Red Llama or the new Camel Toe. That combo covers Fender tones more cost effectively than any other way IMO.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

i had an ltd as well. i liked it a lot with my esquire but to get the goods it was SO DAMN LOUD. it sat great in the mix when playing shows but it was just too loud so i got rid of it. there are better amps out there for sure

Re: Volune of fender bassman

Yes they're loud - it's the amp that inspired the Marshall. It comes with the territory, so if just aren't going to be able to use it that loud, get a different amp. Nothing will sound "the same" - part of the bassman's sound is its volume which dramatically affects the way frequencies are pushed/our perception of the EQ, so don't expect anything else to sound "the same". I'd say a Hot Rod De Ville 2x12, but that'd most likely still be too loud. There's a lot of lunchbox amps that could work volume-wise, but the sound will be completely different from the bassman - so the best suggestion that comes to mind is some type of 18W Marshall. It won't sound like a typical Marshall, and it won't sound like a bassman, but it should be in the same ballpark (or at least the same stadium) and sound good at reasonable volumes. You just won't have much clean headroom anymore.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

I built one and it's a personal amp for me. I've tamed it a bit by running 12AU7 in V1 and 5751 in V2. Using small bottle 5881's. Could definitely put a lesser rectifier in it. But yeah, 4 speakers moves some air.

Don't be scared. It's a musical treat.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

I also mixed two ceramic 10's with the Alnico 10's. Still loud but the different speaker types really compliment each other well.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

i liked the amp fine and i tried to get the goods at a lower volume but i couldnt get it lower enough to really gig it so i got rid of it. the 5e7 you built for me gets the 6l6 tweed tone i like at a much more reasonable volume, especially since i can use 1x10 or 1x12 or both to adjust the volume as well.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

Nothing will quite sound the same without the high volume, But THIS will get you close thru a clean amp.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

aww isnt that cute. it doesnt really sound like a tweed bassman to me. when that pedal came out i was working in music stores and had my bassman ltd, the pedal is fine for what it is but it doesnt sound like a real amp. it sounds like a pedal

Re: Volune of fender bassman

It sounds amazing, but way too loud for me, for home or stage.

Re: Volune of fender bassman

what about just adding a pentode/triode switch? then plugging into input 2 on the amp. that should cut the DB noise level significantly and give you the option of playing loud when you need to as well. Thats what I decided to do with my Twin. The Triode setting makes it a little less articulate, fatter sounding, and more spongy sounding, some people prefer it on Fender amps. it cuts the db level almost in half and then input number 2 on most Fender amps cuts the volume again on some of their amps by as much as 6db. thats around 8 to 9db volume cut. Pentode mode runs the tubes at maximum efficiency and it makes the amp loud and punchy for a bigger venue.........just a thought, a lot of amp makers are doing this now for home level so you can practice or small club level. depends on the amp though. reviews on black face Fenders are good but I havent read any reviews how it sounds on a bassman. Marshall uses this all the time on many of their amps. its a simple fix but it might work. personally I like 12 inch speakers for fat overdrive tones and I think Triode mode which seems to push more mids would sound better with 12 inch speakers. Thats why I dont know how it would work with the bassmans 10 inch speakers

Re: Volune of fender bassman

plugging into the 2 output cuts the gain to the first stage, it lowers the volume in the process but in order to get the amp where its juicy you need to turn it up to the same level as before and even then it sounds different. triode mode changes the tone a bunch but does lower the clean threshold a fair amount too. as far as 10's verses 12's thats all preference and there are lots of options in both sizes that cover a wide range of tones. its not just playing loud, its getting the tone you want at a reasonable volume

Re: Volune of fender bassman

What are you thinking for him at this point, maybe a supersonic with its split Bassman tone circuit on the clean side? Or a 68 reissue?

Re: Volune of fender bassman

Bassman in all its melt down glory is a thing of beauty.

Dang, does anyone ever complain that a JTM-45 is too loud?

Re: Volune of fender bassman

people complain my deluxe reverb is too loud. i use an attenuator half the time and pedals the other half

Re: Volune of fender bassman

I've got the same mix of speakers in my 59 LTD. Awesome. Pure awesome.

Here's the thing, it's a great clean platform. As others have pointed out, it is not an amp you can crank to get your overdriven tones and not expect the soundman to start throwing things at you. It sounds exquisite when cranked but not at a volume that's practical in any way. I use a pedal for my overdrive (Lovepedal Les Lius gets you there) and the amp has a wonderful clean tone.

But then again lots of tube amps are too loud when cranked up. The only place I've been able to use my 5E3 Deluxe clone (which is 12 watts into a 1x12) cranked up is on an outdoor stage.
