Voodoo Mod?

Does anyone have any experience with the Voodoo Amps mod for the Mesa rectifier series? I have a 150watt triple rec head which needless to say is not the best for classic/80's rock/hair-metal. The sound clips on their site sound nice and much more usable. Have any of you ever heard one in person? Is it worth the 4 to 5 hundred bucks the basic mod will cost with shipping? I know many of you are not recto fans so you don't need to remind me. LOL Thanks for the input.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

I sent them a brand new Soldano for some mods and they ruined it. I know they have allot of fans on Harmony Central but I was not happy at all. The work was sloppy and the amp sounded bad and worst of all it was irreversable. I ended up having to send it back to Soldano for a total rebuild and when they saw the amp they were appalled and told me whoever did the mods was a "hacker". I lost quite a bit of money on that deal and was even threatened with lawsuits from Voodoo when I posted pics of the work on the internet. Caveat Emptor.

I was seriously contemplating sending in my DSL 50 for their mod until I read about this and seen the pics, it was simply awful work!!!!

Re: Voodoo Mod?

Well, I guess that answers that, huh? Thanks for the heads-up. Unless I get flooded with positive replies , I think I will pass. It's a shame because the rectifier is mint, it just doesn't suit my playing style. Maybe I will end up selling it. Thanks again.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

I have heard good things about Voodoo, as well as what is posted above. I suspect the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Every company has happy and unhappy customers. Jeremy for one has had some good work done by them. I suspect they must have some happy customers, or they'de be out of business.

However, my personal opinion is that you will probably be money ahead, and happier, if you sell the Mesa Rec, add the $500 and get something to better suit your needs. That new Stilleto Ace has my attention in a big way.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

I have a JCM 800 Trace modded and it's killer. Trace is a super cool guy with excellent customer service. I heard he used to use epoxy all over the circuit to hide his propietary mods...this upset a lot of people because it looked really bad (or so I've heard). He doesn't do that anymore.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

Yeah, like I said, there are plenty of people who are happy with their work. I am not one of them. There are plenty of other folks who do great mods and build high quality custom amps who are honest and are respected. Doug Roccaforte and FJA are two that come to mind. I would shop around and ask around a bit before I sent my amp anywhere. Take it from someone who learned the hard way.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

The only thing worth modding to me is cheap used gear that can only be an improvment. A Triple Rec is some Serious Amp for some serious money. If It's not your thing don't hack it, sell it and find what works.

It's like modding a Vette. Maybe you need a Viper instead.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

I have a voodoo modded 800 and love it. KNow what you want and what the mod will do. Some of the bad responses are from expecting the sound of heaven in unlikely environments.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

Thank you for all of the replies. I agree that the triple-rec is a sick amp and I think that when the time is right for me, I will sell it and get something else. Thank you all again.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

Considering you already have a 5150, why not just have the 5150 modded for the tone you're after and use the mesa for the heavier side of things? I wouldn't sell the mesa if I were you, nice amp and it probably makes a nice complement to the 5150.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

Hey Brewtone, I have a DSL100 that has the deluxe Voodoo mod and it is an amazing sounding amp. I bought the amp with this mod already done and, even though I didn't spend any money with Trace, he's been extremely helpful with a number of things for me.

I can whole-heartedly recommend getting the Voodoo deluxe mod on a DSL.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

I'm in the sell the Rec camp. A Triple is more than anyone needs, and for the tones you're looking for, you can probably find a used Soldano HR, Splawn, or similar for what you can get for the Rec.

Re: Voodoo Mod?

Well, I thought alot about what you guys have been saying. So, I sold my Mesa and I ordered a new Splawn Quickrod. I think it will suit my style and the music I play much better. Thank you all for your suggestions.
