Voodoo Modded amps... anyone have one?

Re: Voodoo Modded amps... anyone have one?

I had trace do a jcm800 years and years ago and I was very happy with the mods

Re: Voodoo Modded amps... anyone have one?

Trace knows what end is up...especially withe Marshall stuff.
Is it one of their amps...or are you sending them something.?
What are you having done.?

Re: Voodoo Modded amps... anyone have one?

I have a Voodoo modded ADA MP-1 and it sounds far better than a stock unit. Trace was also able to solve an issue with the stock MP-1 that the ADA Depot folks claimed couldn't be done (gaps between EQ bands).

If my Suhr OD100 doesn't end up working out in the long run I've been considering a Modded JVM210H or Modded Boogie Rectoverb 50 head. I do like that he's got an effects loop fix for the Boogie - that was my major bug-a-boo with that amp.

Re: Voodoo Modded amps... anyone have one?

The effects loop will certainly be a Plus.....if you are wanting one.

The JVM.....all depends on what it is missing to Your Ears.
"Gain" seems to be a big deal for players these days...but if they add that, or anything else, I am sure you would be happy with the changes. Assuming, of course, that the mods they do/did will address concerns you have with said amp.
good luck

Gain isn't an issue. Most amps on the market have more than enough. What I'm really looking for is body and clarity. Better EQ, low-volume response, richer and fuller sound... you know - taking a good amp and refining it.

Re: Voodoo Modded amps... anyone have one?

I have played one of their V Plex models ( a little too refined compared to actual old NMVs IMO, but killer nonetheless), and a modded original DSL 50w. Both were serious tone machines. The DSL was a big improvement, much more meaty, without muddy. I have often contemplated bringing him my Class5 and doing a mod while I wait. Hes not too terribly far from me. I could make a day or overnight trip out of it.

Since you're considering a JVM, have a look at the workbench forum over at JVMforum.com, here: http://jvmforum.com/phpBB3/viewforum.php?f=7&sid=4b23654bb6a28c441ad247b702a72dd0

In particular click on the Modding Bible towards the top. In that sub-forum you'll find the Mod Catalog, here's the direct link: http://jvmforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=5252&sid=d99616c7cb7de730be2a2ad1d2033869 it lists the most popular mods on the forum and gives a basic rundown of how each is done and what it will do to the amp.

I've done the Blackface Clean Channel, 1959 Plexi Crunch, Plexi One Wire/3rd Gain Stage, JCM800 2203 OD1, Rectifier OD2, Negative Feedback Adjustment, and Plexi Cap mods to my 410H. They all improved the amp, although the Rectifier Mod doesn't really make it sound like a Recto (I own one), but I like what it did to that channel. I also may do the Choke Mod, mod the Poweramp to take 6550s, and might try different transformers in the future. But for now, I'm happy with it.

I did all these mods myself, but if you aren't comfortable, there are guys on there that do perform mods, or any competent tech should he able to do them for you. And all these mods can be done to a 205H, you'll just be a little more limited on how many you can do (you can do any of the mods, but you can only do so much per channel). I guess if I had a 205, I would do the Plexi Cap, Plexi One Wire/3rd Gain Stage, Negative Feedback, which effect the whole amp, then the Blackface Clean to the 1st channel and the JCM 800 2203 to the second channel. The One Wire will allow you to dial in some extra gain in the preamp (quite a bit more, actually) and the Negative Feedback will allow you to get the Poweramp to break up at lower volumes.

I have Mesa Heartbreaker that was Voodoo modded when I bought it. Since I don't know what this particular amp sounded like before the mod, I can't say how much of an improvement it was, but I have seen a few good vids of a stock Heartbreaker and there is definitely a difference. The ones that stick out the most are more headroom and no fizziness on the gain no matter how much you crank it. Like it so much I don't miss playing my old Marshall JMP that much anymore.

Re: Voodoo Modded amps... anyone have one?

what about a friedman mod?

I've played a few Marshalls that he's modded. They're very good and his prices are fair. All things being equal, I'd prefer to buy a Brown Eye or a Naked. ;)

I'll take a look at that! Thanks!

Good to know! I like the immediacy of Mesa amps, but they always seem to have this fizz in the high end that I can't dial out. So Many amps I try are sooooo close, it occured to me I might be able to just get the amps and have them modded to improve them rather than spending a mint on one boutique rig.

Re: Voodoo Modded amps... anyone have one?

Voodoo did my 800. Gain is less fizzy and better detailed.
Trace seems like a great guy. I talked to him on the phone for 20 minutes about what I wanted.

Good to know! The 50 and 100w vertical input 800's are awesome amps if you can find a good stock one that hasn't been messed with.
