This statement simply doesn't apply if you follow the laws of physics, I'm afraid. Std HB vs. mini-HB, design-wise, it's actually the opposite.

What does "focused sound" mean anyway? Please, explain. Like it's stated, it doesn't really have meaning.

Many ages ago, I had an Explorer with a Jazz bridge in the neck with a Screaming Demon and I felt it did a good job at the time. Years later, I have to ask myself, "How would a Jazz bridge in the neck compliment a 59/C?"

I have this combo in a Les Paul, and it works well. However, having used a 59/J neck (put together by another forum member), I'd say that the neck hybrid would be a step up.

I prefer guitars with medium to warm tone. So for me it is easy to say that I need a neck pickup that brings a nice clarity to the high end, while keeping the low end tight and articulate. Full shred neck/perpetual burn with a A5 magnet?

Exactly. Specifically, the physical factor, aka the Harmonic node reading of the strings. Not to mention the physical placement on the guitar. Inform yourself on the subject and you'll see. Or not. It's up to you.

Using the word physics or science without an explanation doesn't make you sound smarter or prove anything.

That's the beauty of science: it doesn't care about your feelings. It is what it is. You know it or you don't. You understand the concept or you don't.

I don't need to sound "smarter" (smarter than what, exactly?). It's a statement about something without the most basic understanding of the subject at matter was what put yourself on the other side of the spectrum.

A smaller window of how much of the string a pickup sees does not guarantee a fatter a thinner tone. You can make an ice pick humbucker and a mud mini humbucker and vise versa.

And FWIW, dropping a single vocab word and saying "look it up" is a good way to establish ignorance towards a subject in my experience.

I was piondering if they could put an SM3 into a full sized covered bucker housing. LOVE LOVE LOVE that neck pickup.

Except that it does. Specially the p'up placement due to the specific physic form factor of the mini-HB... not to mention all the other quirks, like the not optimal magnetic projection of the screws, plus the tendence to squeal due to the inherent design flaw of being held by the cover's solder points. Also, I'm talking about the neck p'up specifically.

That's the inherent design flaw of mini HBs. As a set, the neck is dull and the bridge shrill. That's the nature of the beast. To be specific, this set procuces a very sought-after tone used for clean Rhythm parts in the middle position, because it "cut-through-the-mix" like no other. That's why the De Luxe was used quite often in the studio in pop music in the '80s, specially in Nashville. if Jay Graydon's opinion have any valor to you.

Well, stating exactly the opposite of what it really is doesn't help to establish confidence in the value of the opinion on the discussed matter, now does it?

One of the keys to a hybrid tone is the missmatched coils. Maybe a Jazz bridge coil with a 59 Neck coil? Since the 59 Custom Hybrid is a A5 would think the match should be the same mag to have a similar response. Would suggest that we let the designers at Duncan work out the details on the specifics.

I wish “Hybrid” was just a production model and you can pick your coils a la carte as a shop floor custom. Many hybrid combinations have been tried, almost all with stellar results for various purposes.

I'd love to see the hybrid become a regular model. But, I feel the solution is right in front of us. Why not just use a P-Rail?

The point of the P-Rail is to access multiple tones (i.e. single coil, P-90, humbucking) in a single pickup.

The goal of a hybrid neck pickup isn't solely to have access to a bunch of different sounds, but to benefit from the unique qualities that strategically mis-matching coils can yield.

Also, a hybrid still looks like any other traditional pickup, so it's less of a "niche" design compared to pickups like the P-Rails, Parallel Axis, etc.

I'm aware of that. But a P-Rail is a hybrid when it's in humbucking mode. You still get the same effect. Maybe wire it in parallel to better match the 59/C.

I totally get where you're coming from, and you're correct.

However, the P-Rail is a more drastic "hybrid" than what most people are seeking with the '59/Custom Neck idea and the unique look of the P-Rail, though subtle, still tends to scare off a lot of purists.

I'm a big P-rail fan, so I totally get what you're suggesting.
