Vox AC15 CC1X

So, I love the clean sound of my Tele through my Blues Deluxe, but the overdrive is not great - and I don't like my Lester through it at all. I'm thinking about a Vox with the blue Celestion speakers, probably the AC15 - anyone tried one? How does the sound differ to the Fender amps?

Re: Vox AC15 CC1X

I have a vox like that, and it's great! It's an EL84 driven guy and is chimey and throaty. Normally kinda opposite to fender sound...but fenders these days are actually more like vox. If you were playing say a old Twin, then perhaps i'd say give the vox a try (for a honest change).

How bout trying a big ol twin?
The vox is killer, especially with the blue speaker, and nice bottles...yum

I really need a small amp - got another baby on the way, so size is everything. My Blues Deluxe is a '95 model, not one of the recent reissues (though I don't know if they differ much).

Re: Vox AC15 CC1X

The new AC15 sounds very good, but I am a bit concerned about the build quality of those amps. They look and feel very cheaply made.

The Blues Deluxe is a very good amp, especially your '95 (they were still made in the USA back then). If I were you I'd keep it and buy a good pedal for drive/distortion.

I use an old Tube Screamer and that sounds awesome - I love the amp with the Tele but it just doesn't work (for me) clean with the Lester.

Re: Vox AC15 CC1X

Those little Voxes sound really great. It'll be different from your Fender, but if you like that sound it is wonderful for the price you pay. What's stopped me from picking one up in the past is the build quality. I've heard a lot of horror stories about the CC line. I believe B Bent had one that blew up or something...

I had one catch fire in the store and played another that was just "not right" in any sense of the word.

Beyond jangle...very harsh & shrill.

Putting a new speaker in your blues dlx and getting a kool dirt box, that gets my vote.

Re: Vox AC15 CC1X

i saw the demo vid on youtube for the custom classic Vox's, the guy only played the 30, but it sounded amazing, the 15 probly sounds just as great.

Re: Vox AC15 CC1X

The AC15CC is a nice amp, but you're not really going to save any volume for around the house. I'd spend on a nice pedal and attenuator, or look at a sub-5w amp for house use.

Blues and hot rod deluxes are notorious for having a wooly bottom end. Try a celestion G12H30 speaker. That should help a lot. Better yet, get a 1x12 with the celestion, and plug the amp's speaker output into it. That way you have an LP-friendly speaker and a tele-friendly speaker.

But yeah, attenuator and nice pedal will go a long way too.

Hmmm - my dad used to work for Celestion so I may be able to get hold of a G12H30; that'll drop straight into the Blues Deluxe and make a big difference?

Re: Vox AC15 CC1X

Try a pro junior, Tube it out with some higher gain tubes and I like to think it has a british sound. Sound great with my tele.

Re: Vox AC15 CC1X

I'd sell some stuff and get a used Supersonic combo. For a nice house and gigging amp that's versatile and comes stock with a Celestion Vin 30, it's a good buy.

The AC15 will sound more boxy, middy, and brash on high notes. It's an appropriate sound for some roots rock, but I don't think it's what you're after.
The 30 watt Vox's sound much better, but require some volume to get much dirt.

I think so. But individual tastes vary, so it may not work for you. It is a fairly inexpensive and easy thing to try, and you'll be surprised at the difference.
