Vox AC4TVH

Bought one used for 80 bucks. Was skeptical about its volume and headroom. I ran it though a Greenback cab and now I'm upset, cause even at the quarter watt mode, this thing is way too loud to practice at home or an apartment.

Plus side is that it takes pedals well and sounds a lot a like a smoother pathfinder. Great tones.



Out of the three that I have- pathfinder, ac4, and the ac 15 VR, I like the VR with a celestion v type speaker the most. Very clear, lots of chime, the OD 1 sounds more transparent (with chime when strummed) and OD2 sound more rounded and chimey. Not raspy like before. My 2 cents only.

I'm interested in picking up an amplifier like this as a portable alternative to my ac30. how's that vox cabinet sound?

The speaker is awesome, and I think the bass frequencies may have been adjusted by vox. It has deeper bass which you can hear with different amp heads like blackstar, night train etc. In terms of build quality I remember another member saying the cabinet itself was not that great, but I have had no problems with it yet.

Lol, I'm just kidding, from what I've heard they are pretty cool little heads as long as you're not looking for a whole lot of headroom. The fact you don't need a forklift to move it must be nice too! Mine weighed 73lbs when it had Greenbacks in it, now that it's loaded with Blues it's probably in the 95lb-100lb range? It doesn't get moved much now....

I don't know if you can do this or not with that amp, but in my Hot Rod Deluxe I replaced the first 12AX7 with a 12AT7 and it was noticeably more quiet, like my volume level between 4 & 5 was where I was at between 2 & 3 with the 12AX7. Worth a shot maybe if its too loud for ya?

From what little information I could find on the internet about preamp tube swapping in the AC-4 head putting a 12AT7 or 12AU7 in V1 should be completely fine? It looks like a few guys have done it with pretty positive results & I know for a fact you can do it to AC-15's & AC-30's. Nevertheless, you should still error on the side of caution & give Korg USA a call before you start to experiment... A 12AT7 would also allow for some extra headroom too... Like Trey said, it's worth a shot as long as it doesn't hurt the amp...

Definitely more clean headroom! I love the mod on my HRD!

Swapping from a 12AX7 to a 5751 / 12AT7 / 12AU7 won't damage the amp; they're all compatible tubes with different gain factors. Whether or not it'll solve the OP's problem depends on what they're after. Reducing the gain will absolutely reduce volume, and it's a great idea for playing clean. There really isn't a good solution for overdriven tones from a non-master amp without the excess volume.
