Who makes the best clones of these classic PTP amps AC30 and AC15?
Anyone make clones of these?

Vox amps are simply ugly. They need a new styling scheme...get rid of that old English Tudor look. I would buy one if I could find and older true PTP for a reasonable amount.

Blasphemy!

But to answer your question; I think the Matchless DC-30 is one of the hottest Vox clones out there, but I haven't been fortunate enough to play one. Lucky you, if you can afford one.

I can't afford a $2400 amp! Any amp priced above $1500 is simply too much unless your talking to a professional musician which I'm not. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. I think $1000 is on the verge of too much. I guess I'm not so lucky. I may have to buy a junky new AC30 and deal with the problems.

No, you don't, converted to American currency and price level, I paid less than $1000 for my all tube '91 AC30, which is only beaten by the original 60's models and the new handwired ones. It sounds awesome!

Re: Vox clones

If you don't mind modelling amps, the Vox Valvetronix are supposed to be very good and definitely $1,000 and under. Stratdeluxer swears by his for British tones and he has some great ears!

Valvetronixs are decent but not superb. I own one of the valvetronix 30 watt combos and prefer to play with my POD, it just has more character and strength to my ears.

You would expect a valvetronix model of an ac30 tb would be the best out there. But that jsut isn't the case in my opinion

Re: Vox clones

You need to step up to the Vox VTX or the head version VTH to experience the valvetronics line. Comparing the 30 watt combo is like comparing a Vetta to a spider. I have the 60 watt VTX head , and it will reproduce any tone you can imagine. I would like to do a blind fold test on any doubters. I played all the modelers, and I do mean all, and nothing comes close to these things.

Re: Vox clones

Check out Valvetech Amplifiers. They do (from what I've gathered) a very good AC-30 clone for extremely cheap (around 1k) and it's all quality parts and real PTP wiring!

Re: Vox clones

wat about a laney VC30 thats wat im savin for. There pretty cheap compared to british made VOX's or MATCHLESS.

Re: Vox clones

Scott_F makes the Franklin, which is supposed to be a Vox-ish amp. I trust the sound clips from the Celtic Amps website that they are definetly good amps!

Re: Vox clones

The Franklin is a Matchless Lightning/Vox AC15 clone. And, it's affordable.

Re: Vox clones

I'd look at a Mesa Maverick 212. You can find these on the 'Bay for less than a Grand. You'll have a better made amp than the Vox, with much more control over your tone. And the Mav can do everything from Vox-like chime, Plexi grind and Fenderish cleans.
