VOX in a box

I know there are plenty of Marshall stomps out there but does anyone know of a good...great VOX stomp. I am thinking about taking a gig where some AC30 tones will be needed.

The Wampler 30 Something sounds pretty good in demos - though I don’t have first hand experience. What amp will it be going through?

Not sure yet if I am going to use the DSL or the JC120 for the gig.

Hmmmm... all of the demos I’ve heard are into Fender tone stacks. For a DSL, it might be as simple as an EQ to cut the mids (at a different point to Fenders). I’m not at my computer to grab EQ curve graphics - will get them tomorrow.

I have a Wampler 30-Something, as well as an AC30CCX and an AC30HWX to compare. The Wampler is damn close. My ideal tone on the ACs is 10 o'clock on the bass and 2 o'clock on the treble and treble cut at 50%. The Wampler is tuned so that that setting is nearly 12 o'clock for all on the pedal.

Also, the Wampler does Queen really well with everything dimed, and has an onboard boost. There's also a switch that changes the color from AC15 to AC30.

I've tried Tech 21 and Line6 but the Wampler is closer to the actual amp sound.

Strangely, I've also discovered it makes a great direct pedal for acoustics that use those thin twippy piezo pickups or Fishman/magnetic type. My SJ200 and my Seagull S6+ with a Fishman RareEarth sound natural like they're mic'd if I run into the Wampler then a DI to the board.

Boss BC2 comes to mind. You want vox od kinda tones, then the bc2 would work. Aside from that tech21 Liverpool can work too.

Nice to know, the Nashville clean in the DSL is based on the Fender stack. I am leaning towards the Wampler 30 Something. I don't know if I want to cough up that much cash new. I do like the boost feature and the 15/30 switch. I am seeing them used at fairly reasonable prices. That might be the way to go.

Re: VOX in a box

I’ve got a Thirty Something. It’s a great pedal. You know how some Marshall in a Box pedals just sound like a DS-1, gain maxed with a Marshall tone stack instead of the Big Muff tone control? Then others actually give you a little hint of the lower and mid gain flavors of Marshall and react vaguely amp-like? The Thirty Something is the later camp, on 30 Watt mode you don’t actually get all that much saturation. You get the sparkly highs, shelved lows and a bit of breakup. Max out the 15 Watt and boost and you do get into Brian May territory. I like to use mine for Tom Petty, Brit Pop and The Edge type tones.

Re: VOX in a box

I bought the Joyo AC-tone, which may be a clone of the Tech-21 liverpool. $35. I absolutely love it. And in that price range it's just a ridiculous value.

Re: VOX in a box

I have used the Tech 21 Liverpool, and it is really amazing. I haven't tried the clones of it, though.
