Vox Stomplab IIG

Re: Vox Stomplab IIG

In the hierarchy of heaviness, apparently only Other and User are heavier genres than Hard Core. User must be pretty brOOts!

Could anyone really use the Ballad setting without feeling like a total puss?

Re: Vox Stomplab IIG

Sweetwater says it has USB but I'm not seeing it on Vox's site or in the manual.

Good price though, I think I'll grab it. I loved the Tonelab ST and was thinking about picking up a used one. This looks like it has most of the same features for much less.

Although, if there's no USB or MIDI, there's no way to update this thing. If there's something wrong with the firmware, you're f'd.

Re: Vox Stomplab IIG

I'm pretty sure it has USB.

Pretty sure it doesn't.

Re: Vox Stomplab IIG

Well, that certainly looks like I was wrong! I swear I read in the review about it that it had USB...

Re: Vox Stomplab IIG

Actually sounds decent in this video. Sounds like some of the presets have a good starting point at least.

I do wish that it had a few more knobs for direct control of EQing though. clicking through options and using the two knobs (for bass and mids on one setting, and treble and presence on another) isn't all that intuitive.

Re: Vox Stomplab IIG

For $89 with an expression pedal it is a no-brainer. Did you hear back from your Sweetwater rep?

I think this is a mistake on our web site. I cannot find any evidence of a USB connection either!

I have a Zoom G3 and I like the fact that it has USB for editing and updating. Zoom released an update this year that added a few new models, where this will be a closed system. (The Zoom is also REALLY easy to edit on the unit itself. Vox really should have spent the extra $5 for a USB connector and software editor.)

My web guy had no idea how that got in the description - it is removed now!

Just ordered mine, so it should be here tomorrow. I'll let you know what I think.

First impression - Haven't plugged it in yet, BUT this thing is tiny. If you're looking at this because it has a pedal.. you may be disappointed. I'll report back later on the sound.

edit:

Second impression - not impressed. This thing is WAY too quiet, and editing is as bad as the Zoom 505 - you only get a two letter display.

There doesn't seem to be a "no cab" option, meaning it doesn't fit into my workflow very well. The manual helps, but you really have to keep track of buttons and menus. If you hit the wrong button, you're out of the editor and all the changes you've made are gone. They have the manual printed in 4 languages, but one section is printed only at the end of the manual, so you have to keep flipping back and forth to see what you're doing while editing. WTF.

Overdrives and amps are under the same category, meaning you can't put an overdrive in front of an amp.

I'll give it another hour tomorrow, but I think this thing is going right back. Was hoping that it'd be as good as the Tonelab ST was, but obviously it's a big failure.

edit:

Got it. Had to reset the expression pedal for volume, it was operating at half volume on full. (Just had to push hard on the expression pedal to turn it off and back on.)

Getting great sounds at decent volumes. Only issue now is that it doesn't like running off the same power supply as other pedals, it gave off an annoying hum. Once it was plugged into an adapter by itself it was clean. Slightly disappointed that I can't use the internal overdrive pedals in front of the amp model, but I've got a good half dozen overdrive pedals here that work perfectly.

Re: Vox Stomplab IIG

Decided to sell it, have some new toys on the way that I'll be posting about in a few days. Nothing wrong with it, but the new toys are much easier to dial in. The lack of a computer editor really makes a difference.
