I agree about the retro cheese look of the Valvetronix. I'm glad they started using steel fronts, but they need to make a head/cab steel version.
I only use it at home and for some sessions, so it doesn't matter, but one of these days, I might take some plywood and tolex and make a cooler looking headbox.
As far as Valvetronix vs. tube amp. The Vox is way more versatile, but the areas where the tube amp wins.....girth of tone and quieter. The Vox has good tone, but it's not as fat as a Marshall, plus it's got more hiss, being a SS amp.
Definitely put it on a closed back cabinet with Celestions. I hear some of the combos at the store and they sound like crap compared to my AD60 head on top of a Bogner or Marshall cab.

I have an AD 50!!!
It's cool for its price.Needs a better speaker ,but had 8 ohm cabinet out!!!so u can use it in your studio with cabinet ,and at home without.the minimum output is about 1 watt ,wich ahs 2 meters hearing distance.perfect for rehersing in bedroom

Yeah, especially on most wattage selections. If you use full power, it still probably won't blow the speaker......at least on 50-60W models. The AD120 is actually two stereo 60W sides.

(I opt for the latter cause I already have a practice amp (vox) that sounds marginally good for practicing - I use an effects processor)

Here's my spin on ss vs tube amps these days as I own several of both...
To me,if I can get good tones out of the SS stuff,then it doesn't matter to me as far as the technology...The amp does have to possess "feel" also though.
The thing I do like about my 120 VTH Valvetronix head,is that there is some feel there because they use 2 12AX7s in the output section of the amp...The tones may not be the exact tones you hear from one old great Marshall,but then 2 old Marshalls didn't sound identical to each other either....
What I'm getting at is that if the amp sounds great(Regardless of tubes or not) then life is good...
This Vox amp has been consistent, alot of fun and it has tons of tonal versatility and some pretty cool "usable" and user friendly effects....
I still love my tube amps but this VTH is a pretty amazing amp into the right cabinet and I've used it alot on both gigs and loud band practices....

I have an AD30VT and all its really good for is cleans or really really buzzy metal tones.
I'm sure with a bigger speaker(s) it would sound better, especialy with an open back cab.
I think its lacking alot of character, but it does have descent dynamics. And they're made like you would expect a $200 amp to be made.

Again, don't buy one of the 50 or lower combo's expecting much. You have to step up to either a vth 60 or 120 head or the 60 or 120 vtx combo. These models offer a lot more versatility, and the construction of the cabs is baltic birch and celestions. The 60 watt head can be found for $450. Add a nice 2x12 cab, and you have a tone machine.

The AD60VTX combo would be OK. I'm pretty sure they make the 120 in a combo with 2 12" inch speakers. And both the 60 and the 120VTX's combos are made with Baltic Birch plywood. The originals open back ones were made with press board. I have one of the original open back combos and it's OK with me. I've run it through my Avatar cab at home but it doesn't sound that good at low volumes going into a cab with a celestion V30 and G12H speakers, also the combos speaker is still going even when I use the external cab so I can't really judge. So if you can find a VTX combo either 60 or 120 for a good price, why not? Or find the head version and then go around to some local shop that sell used gear and take your head with you and plug into some old cabs and see how it sounds, if you like one, take it home.

I have the 120VTH head and run it through the matching AD 2X12 Vox cab...I Pulled the terribly bright Neo-Dogs out and went with a set of V30s and love the setup alot...
I also run this head through my Marshall V30 4x12. Basically I Like the amp with V30s..

I really should install something that uses the existing wiring to my AD60's speaker, but routes the signal to a jack that I could plug into and then go to my cab with the Vintage30 and G12H. I've just never got around to it. I mostly play the Valvtronix on the UK 90's model with an the built-in overdrive, delay, and reverb and have a total shredfest at TV volume. I think the preset is 1-1. I've messed around with the AC-30 and Fender Patches but I feel you need volume for them to be fun.

I've got the AD60VTX combo and while it sounded really good when I put a V30 in it, it KILLS when I put it through my Earcandy 2X12 with the V30 G12H30 mix. The Marshalls sound much more in the realm of Marshall, for lack of a better description. I also love the way the high gain, Vox & Fender models opened up now that I'm using a "3X12" so to speak. When I got the cab, I used the V30 I had put in the Vox in this cab and put the Neodog back in the Vox. I think I'm going to get another V30 for the combo and see how that sounds. Either that or a higher wattage speaker that clones the G12H30.
If I were to buy it again, I would buy the head and a seperate cabinet or the matching Vox cabinet.
According to a Vox rep, the models in the Blue amps and the steel front amps are the same, but the cabs and speakers are better in the blue amps, therefore making them sound better. Again, the amp changed from "yeah, this is pretty neat" to "WOW--I would record and gig with this and be proud" by using the Earcandy.
I've got a Line 6 Vetta too and just to address what someone mentioned earlier, the Vetta does lack some feel but the Marshalls and other high gain models are great--IMHO. The cleaner stuff like the Fenders and Vox amps really lack. They just sound thin to me.

Don't get the Univalve as a bedroom amp. The attenuator in it is nothing like the one in the Valvetronix. The Univalve's built in attnuator will not get you anywhere close to bedroom volume without killing the tone. It's only 15 watts but it's a beast. The built in attenuator won't help much and isn't a very good attenuator, anyway, IMO. I fell for their marketing of getting tube distortion at "almost any volume." I moved to an apartment recently and now I'm not even using it. I have the Avatar cab, too. Maybe with a small cab with an 10" or even an 8 inch speaker for low volume playing. But overall you'll be spending a ton of money on tubes and it's not a forgiving amp. Playing the Univalve at low volume is like trying walk a tight rope. I can't relax and play. I took it to my friends place and we cranked it through a Marshall 1960 cab and it still doesn't have the wow factor. But it is a very honest amp and will force you to play cleaner, but sometimes you just need to bang out some chords, on the Univalve every mistake is amplified. On Fenders and Marshall's they're alot more forgiving. I think you'd do better with a master volume amp.
