Vox Valvetronix AD problem

My amp turned itself off this morning.
I went to my basement ( temp ~ 50F ) and after playing 2-3 minutes on low volume, I decided to give it more power by turnin the 'power attenuating' knob on the backside from 30% (where it was) to some 80%. Just as I've reached halfway, the amp want off. I turned the power off, and then on again, and nothing. I managed to power it up after 5 minutes, and it worked normal since.
Since the power-mixer in the same outlet was working fine, I am sure it is the amp problem.

Does this amp has any king of overpower /overcurrent / overvoltage protection that could have caused this kind of behaviour ?

I know that tubes have to get hot in order to work properly. I played some all-tube amps that needed almost 5 minutes to get a healthy sound. Maybe the electic circuits turned the amp off for a period of time to prevent the damage of tube?

Did any of you have the similar problem?

If none of this, then I'll know that it has gone faulty, so I won't use it for the gigs.

thanx

Re: Vox Valvetronix AD problem

The Vox Valvetronix line has some bugs in it. I just got the AD60 combo about a week ago and i've noticed a few quirks with the system.

When i first got it I had issues getting sound from it. It was very faint and crackly withe the volume all the way up. I then remember something i read on line with them about the FX loop causing issues so I quickly plugged and unplugged a 1/4 inch jack in and out of the FX loop and it cured the problem.

And last night i tried using the headphone jack and i got nothing out of it. I haven't tried it again yet but i'm hoping i'll be able to get it to work.

Bottom line. Give it a few more go's then decide whether you want to chance gigging with it.

Don't get me wrong. The Valvetronix systems are great but there are design flaws that need to be addressed.

Re: Vox Valvetronix AD problem

When I get an unexplained gremlin or weird noises in mine, I do a hard reset on them. That usually sets them right. It seems that the effects send and receive jacks can be a problem with these amps and it's usually fixed with a cleaning. When it can't be fixed with a cleaning, it's time to open the amp up with a soldering iron and melt all the joints leading to those jacks and let them cool down again. I think mounting something on a rigid PCB and then turning around and mounting that jack to a cabinet mounted with speakers can cause cold joint issues.

Re: Vox Valvetronix AD problem

Huh. I haven't had any problems with mine for 15 months untill now. I was thinking anyway about selling it and upgrading to a better system (like Peavey Valveking).

I just can't get a good distorted sound from it. You think Vox Cooltron would do any good with Valvetronix? Did you try some other line of 12ax7 valves.
I've read somewhere that the tube inside is just for show and that it has no real purpose?
