Vox Valvetronix amps?

Re: Vox Valvetronix amps?

A friend of mine has the blue faced 2x12 combo, and he loves it. We used to gig together and he got some very nice tones out of it. Of course as it's been stated you won't sound exactly like the amp it is modeling, but it gets you in the ballpark. Plus if you're jamming or even playing live you, and the other guitariss's (or probably Just you) will care that it's not a genuine tube sound. As long as you give the crowd good music, and a good show they wouldn't care if you played a Silvertone through a Gorilla practice amp. Just as long as it sounded good.

Re: Vox Valvetronix amps?

sorry to highjack but how do you direct record from the line out? you just connect it straight to the computer or what?

Re: Vox Valvetronix amps?

Are the new ones still based on same of these?

Yes, but with a few changes. There are fewer models and presets on the new ones, but the sampling rate is higher to make the modeling tones more accurate. Also, the new ones sport a cooling fan.

Re: Vox Valvetronix amps?

Never rely on a review by someone who hasn't owned a modeler like the Valvetronix or Vetta. They aren't amps you can try in the store for 15 minutes.
You need some time to play with it, combining the OD models with the amp models. For instance, if you play it in the store and set it on the 60's UK looking for a plexi tone, it's not going to sound as close as the Bassman 4-10 model with the Tube Screamer model added. You'd only know that if you had time to mess with it.

The best advise I can offer is to buy head versions, when buying modelers.
That way, you have the benefit of using the same quality cabs that you'd use with your tube amps. I have the Vox AD60VTH head, and it's proven to be one of the most useful amps I've ever owned.........and also one of the cheapest.

Well now, if you don't really need that Ectasy any more....just send her up to me! LOL!!!

Re: Vox Valvetronix amps?

The way I record now rather than going direct is from the external speaker out to a Behringer Ultra-G with the 4x12 cab sim on and then out of the Ultra-G in to a mixer and then to the computer. The mixer is a 4-track. These amps can run fine without a speaker load on them (the Ultra-G does not provide a load unless a cab is hooked up to the direct link jack).

Check out the "Same Old Song and Dance" clip here. I'll do more later, so this is just a taste. No fussing with or EQing this clip; it's in the raw.

Thanks for the clip Keith! I really like it! Was this recorded with your cab, or direct from the head?

Here's a clip of the US High Gain (Soldano) model from my AD50. I'm playing my Tele on this one. :)

Erik, thanks for the clip as well! Really like that sound too, did you record direct from the amp, or did you mic it?

Re: Vox Valvetronix amps?

Well i own a silverfaced ad 50.And it is a great amp!The hi.gain and clean models are all well!:just the Marshall models demand some Marshall cabs.It does not sound bad.But it sounds better with a Marshall cab!
The line-out ,direct into mix is not my cup of tea.Since the line-out do not use the tube in it!But the amp is good for micing !The effects are really usefull and good quality!Tap tempo and bypass ,noisegate and linear wattage control are really great.
The best actual model is the 100 watt head (silver faced) because it has a fx loop!
Check some JeffB clipps! (use the search button). He made many clips with the valvetronix stuff i think!

Re: Vox Valvetronix amps?

I only played through a 30W version for one evening. I did no tweaking, as I was borrowing it just for reheasal (last minute change of assignements--I was supposed to be playing keys, and I did not bring my guitar gear).

I played a Nafta Tele through a TS9 into the amp. I used the decent clean setting that it was set on, and I was suprised at how well it responded to the TS9.

Overall, great bang/buck ratio for a small amp.

Now, if someone wants to donate an AC15 or AC30....

On that clip it's mic'd up. I have some others going direct and also speaker out to the Ultra-G and then direct.

Thanks, Tom. For this clip, I routed the Valvetronix head into a Mesa 2x12 cab with V30s and mic'd the cab. There's just a smidge of reverb, no other processing. I didn't EQ it beyond the head, and I didn't experiment with mic placement for the best sound.

The wife and kids are going out for dinner tonight, so I'll try to lay down a few more clips, including direct-from-head samples.
